Abstract: An apparatus for screening test compounds for an effect on a biochemical system comprising: a).a body having at least two intersecting channels fabricated therein, at least one of said at least two intersecting channels having at least one cross-sectional dimension in the range from about 0.1 to about 500mm b).a source of different test compounds fluidly connected to a first of at least two intersecting channels c).at least one component of said biochemical system fluidly connected to a second of the two intersecting channels d).a fluid direction system for flowing said at least one component within the second of said two intersecting channels and for introducing the different test compounds from the first to the second of the two intersecting channels and e).a detecting zone in said second channel for detecting an effect of the test compound on the biochemical system. Also claimed is the method for detecting the test compounds.

Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to improved microfluidic devices (100), systems, and methods of using the same. In particular, the device and systems employ channels (408, 512) having, at least in part, depths that are varied to provide advantageous effects upon the flow rate of fluids in the channel. Typically, microscale channel (408, 512) has an aspect ratio (width/depth) less than or equal to about 1. Variation of the channel depth (408, 512) may be optimized depending upon the nature of the materials to be mixed.
