Abstract: A chemical reaction apparatus includes a solid body which has an outer surface, and in which at least one flow path which allows a chemical medium to flow is formed. This body has a heating element which heats the chemical medium in the flow path to accelerate a chemical reaction of the chemical medium, and a heat radiation preventing film which covers at least a portion of the outer surface of the body, and prevents radiation of heat generated by the heating element from a portion of the outer surface.

Abstract: Two reactants are introduced into a slot-shaped reaction space (3) of a reactor. The space is formed between lateral surfaces (2) of two equally large and right parallelepipedal wall elements (1) comprising solid plates. The reactants are introduced from the edge of the slot-shaped reaction spaces situated on the same side of the block. Two reactants are introduced into a slot-shaped reaction space of a reactor. The spaces are formed between lateral surfaces of two equally large and right parallelepipedal wall elements comprising solid plates. The wall elements are arranged interchangeably in a block within the virtual parallelepiped. The reactants are introduced from edge regions of the slot-shaped reaction spaces situated on the same side of the block. The reactants are conducted as a reaction mixture through the reaction spaces in the same direction in parallel flows. A fluid heat exchange medium is conducted through tubular cavities (5) extending in the interior of the wall elements to obtain the desired reaction. An independent claim is also included for apparatus comprising the reactor in which the slot-shaped reaction spaces are capable of having the reactants supplied from the same side of the block. The reaction spaces are oriented to guide the reaction mixture in the same direction in parallel flows.

Abstract: A medical device is provided which may include a reservoir which has an opening and contains a sensor; a reservoir cap closing off the opening to isolate the sensor from an environmental component outside the reservoirs, the reservoir cap being impermeable to the environmental component and adapted to selectively undergo a phase change to disintegrate the reservoir cap and thereby expose the sensor to the environmental component. A method of use may include (i) selectively disintegrating a reservoir cap to expose a sensor which is disposed inside a reservoir of a device implanted in a patient, the disintegrating comprising inducing a phase change in the reservoir cap; and (ii) using the sensor to generate an output signal, wherein the output signal is recorded and stored in a writeable computer memory chips, directed to a microprocessor for immediate analysis and processing, or sent to a remote location away from the device.

An Independent claim is also included for a process for applying a number of micro-droplets to a substrate comprising producing a media region on a number of nozzle openings; and displacing liquid from each of the media regions by deforming a deformable component bordering the media zone so that a micro-droplet is expelled from each nozzle opening.

Abstract: The present invention provides a masking system for selectively applying cells to predetermined regions of a surface. A mask is positioned adjacent to a surface to cover some portions of the surface while allowing other portions of the surface to remain uncovered. Cells then are applied to uncovered portions of the surface and the mask removed. Alternatively, a cell-adhesion promoter is applied to uncovered portions of the surface, and then cells are applied to the surface before or after removal of the mask from the surface. The masking system can be pre-coated, at least on those surfaces which will come into contact with cells, with a cell-adhesion inhibitor to resist absorption of cells and thereby avoid cell damage when the mask is removed (if cells are deposited prior to removal of the mask). A polymeric elastomeric mask that comes into cohesive-conformal contact with a surface to be patterned can be used.

Abstract: A microcomponent (1) for carrying out chemical reactions has an electric heating element, which is arranged directly on the surface of the microcomponent (1). The electric heating element can have, for example, a printed conductor track (3) applied to the surface of the microcomponent (1). The heating of the microcomponent (1) can be measured continuously using a temperature sensor essentially consisting of a resistance thermometer (4). The microcomponent (1) and the electric heating element can be produced by means of semiconductor manufacturing methods. A plurality of microcomponents (1) can be used arranged alongside one another for carrying out a complex reaction process.
