Abstract: The liquid-crystalline 5-phenylpyrimidine derivatives have an Sc or Sc phase and are described by the formula (I) in which the symbols have the following meaning: R and R denote identical or different, straight-chain or branched alkyl or alkenyl groups having k to 16 carbon atoms, with or without an asymmetric carbon atom, it also being possible for one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups to be replaced by -O- and/or -S- -A and -B in each case denote or in which the radicals R , R are in each case on the phenylene portion of -A, -B and m and n denote 0 or 1, but m and n do not denote simultaneously 1, with the following provisos: a) for m = n = 0 k is 8 and in R the CH2 group next to the phenyl ring is replaced by -O-; b) for m = 1 and n = 0 k is 2, and c) for m = 0 and n = 1 k is 2 and in R the CH2 group next to the phenyl ring is replaced by -O-.

Abstract: Optically active oxirane-2-carboxylic esters with a mesogenic moiety are suitable for use as dopants in liquid crystal mixtures. They lead to liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases having short response times and to electroclinic phases having large electroclinic coefficients. A further advantage is that they induce a helix of very small pitch, so that they are also suitable for helix compensation in LC mixtures.

Abstract: Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (FLCs) which exhibit a ferroelectric phase and a chiral nematic phase at temperatures above the ferroelectric phase are provided. The natural helix pitch of the FLC in the ferroelectric phase of these materials is sufficiently tighter than the thickness of the FLC layer such that it is not surface-stabilized. The chiral nematic phase has a natural helix pitch sufficiently greater than the cell thickness to facilitate alignment of the FLC in an FLC device to achieve high contrast. The FLCs of this invention are useful in making fast response, high contrast FLC electro-optic devices in which the FLC retains a helical director structure stable to unwinding.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method of coating a base with a plasma-sprayed layer with a spray powder contained in the molten state in the plasma. In the proposed process, the powder is introduced via powder feed ducts in the vicinity of the neutrode(s) or anode(s) or between the two into a channel of a plasma spray device, at least one arc being at least 20 mm in length at least some of the time and the base to be coated being a so-called continuous strip or large-surface unit of at least 0.005 m . The invention also concerns a device for coating a base, comprising a number of plasma spray devices and at least one noise-protection cabinet; the plasma spray devices each comprise at least one neutrode and at least one anode for producing an arc of at least 20 mm in length and for heating a spray powder. The spray powder is introduced in the vicinity of the anode(s) or neutrode(s) and/or between the two, and the device is provided with a device for micro-roughing the article in the form of a mechanical, physical or radiation micro-roughing unit.
