[Also in Division C3] Tetraphenols of formula where R 1 is H or C 1-4 alkyl and n is 1 or 2 may be prepared by esterifying the diol bis [4-(#- hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] dimethyl methane with the corresponding acid, or with acetoacetic acid or levulinic acid and phenol or a substituted phenol. In examples (1) bis[3,3-(4 1 -hydroxy- 3 1 -t. butylphenyl) butanoic acid ester of bis (#- hydroxyethyl) dioxydiphenyl dimethyl methane is prepared by reacting o-t. butylphenol with the acetoacetic acid ester of said diol and (2) bis [4,4-(4 1 -hydroxy-3 1 -sec. butylphenyl)] pentanoic acid ester of said diol is prepared by esterification of the diol with the acid in xylene in the presence of p-toluenesulphonic acid as catalyst.

[Also in Division C2] Moulding compositions comprise a polyolefin and 0À005 to 5 weight per cent of each component of a stabilizer composition of (a) and (b) in a weight ratio of (a) to (b) of 1: 9 to 9 :1, wherein (a) is a phosphorus containing bisphenol of formula where R is hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl and R 1 and R 2 are C 2-20 alkyl or phenyl; and (b) is R 3 -S-S-R 4 , where R 3 and R 4 are C 8-20 alkyl. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene and poly-4-methylpentene; The compositions may be moulded to form bottles, machine parts, pipes and fibres. Examples describe the stabilizing of polypropylene with di-(ootadecyl) disulphide.
