Abstract: The invention relates to crosslinked polymers containing porous, bead-form particles based on units of water-soluble monomers or vinyl acetate and/or vinyl alcohol units, crosslinking monomers, acetal group-containing monomers and optionally further monomers which are copolymerisable with one another. These products are, inter alia, particularly hydrolysis-stable and can have high crosslinking densities. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of these polymers and to their use in chromatography and as carriers for biologically active substances.

Abstract: Polymers (A) consist mainly of (1) units derived from monomers of formula (I) and (2) units derived from at least one other monomer. X = H or methyl; R = 1-12C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; Y = hydroxy or amino. The size of the polymer particles is 20-800 microns; they are practically spherical and have mean pore dia. 5-2000 (pref. 10-1000)nm. R = 1-6C aliphatic hydrocarbon, esp. methylene, and Y = hydroxy. A portion of Y may be replaced by spacer gps., esp. epoxy units at 0.1-20 mole % on total polymer. Pref. polymers contain 10-80 (esp. 15-60) mole % (I) units; 20-50 (esp. 30-50) mole % hydrophilic monomer units, and 1-50 (esp. 5-40) mole % crosslinking monomer. Opt. they also include 4-40 (8-20) mole % other non-hydrophilic, non-crosslinking monomers.
