Abstract:
In a stereo system having sum and difference signals that are processed for stereo image enhancement, apparent directivity of the stereo sound is increased by the use of servo systems (40, 44) for the left and right processed difference signals (L - R)p, (R - L)p. Each of the left and right servos (40, 44) responds to the respective left or right stereo input signal (Lin, Rin) and amplifies increases in the respective left or right processed difference signals. The amount of amplification is controlled by feeding back the amplified or directivity enhanced difference signal (L - R)pe, (R - L)pe, first comparing it with the processed difference signal (L - R)p, (R - L)p before directivity enhancement, and then combining it with the input signal (Lin, Rin) in a preselected ratio so as to control the amount of amplification of the processed difference signal that is provided for directivity enhancement.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for making a filament winding amenable to inside payout and having squared-off ends providing optimal volumetric efficiency. The filament crossovers are distributed so as to reduce crossover stacking in one or a few places which can interfere with winding and payout from the finished winding. A base wire layer (48) is wrapped onto a mandrel (30) over which a guide (52) is nestingly wound with adjacent guide wire turns spaced apart. The filament first layer is wound nesting in the guide wire, spaces (54), and subsequent filament layers (56) accordingly formed. Each crossing filament turn has an advance in a crossing region substantially aligned with a crossover region in the underlying layer and which in one embodiment is one-half the winding pitch.
Abstract:
A method for restricting the mode of operation of long wavelength waveguide lasers by introducing an approximate step function into the reflectivity of circular optical elements (19) used in such lasers. The preferred method is to grind off a portion of the optical coating (20) of the optical element (19) leaving a circular unground region (26) of high reflectivity having a diameter (D) of approximately 60 % of the laser bore width (b) bounded by a ground region (28) of lower reflectivity. The method permits simple, inexpensive field modification of existing lasers.
Abstract:
A method for application of an adherent nickel plate to titanium includes steps of surface preparation, deposition of nickel from a plating solution, and a final treatment. The surface preparation steps include a hydrochloric acid dip, a nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid activation, treatment to slow the re-formation of an oxide layer, and deposition of a nickel strike. The treatment to reduce oxide formation may be accomplished without application of a current, in a solution of acetic and hydrofluoric acid, in which titanium alloy has been electrolytically dissolved. Alternatively, the treatment may be performed with the piece to be plated made anodic in a solution of acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid.

A wideband, true time delay antenna beam-forming network (10) for millimeter wave phased array antennas is disclosed herein. The beam-forming network (10) of the present invention includes a laser (30) for generating a beam B of electromagnetic energy. The beam-forming network (10) further includes an electro-optic modulator (40) for modulating the beam B in response to an input signal S modulated about a first frequency fo. A first antenna array (80) generates a first electromagnetic field pattern P by radiating the modulated beam B' in a first direction. The present invention further includes a constrained lens (90) for receiving the first field pattern P and for emitting an antenna driver feed beam F in a second direction in response thereto. An antenna array driver (115) electro-magnetically coupled to the constrained lens (90) by the feed beam F provides a set of signals modulated about the first frequency fo to drive an antenna array (20).

A digital correction circuit for use in signal converters is disclosed. The invention includes a subtractor (32) for subtracting a digital correction signal from an input signal, a digital filter (34) for filtering the output of the subtractor to provide a digital output signal and memory (39) for providing said correction signal. In a specific embodiment of the invention, an improved analog-to-digital converter is disclosed including an improved digital-to-analog converter with digital correction circuitry.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for detecting moving objects silhouetted against background clutter. A correlation subsystem (12) is used to register the background of a current image frame (framestore 1) with an image frame taken two time periods earlier (framestore 3). A first difference image is generated by subtracting the registered images, with the first difference image being filtered by low pass filter (34) and thresholded by a three level segmenter (36). A second difference image is likewise generated between the current image frame and another image frame taken at a different subsequent time period. This second difference image is likewise filtered and thresholded. The two difference images are logically ANDed together by gate (39) whose output is connected to a formatter, sorter and feature extractor (40). Track files are generated in CPU (16) for comparing subsequently extracted image features with previously stored extracted features.
Abstract:
A plasma switch employs a cold cathode which yields secondary electrons to sustain a plasma within the switch. The cathode is provided with a series of perturbations which increase the effective cathode surface area exposed to the plasma and increase the average effective path lengths of secondary electrons emitted from the cathode and the probability of such electrons having ionizing collisions with gas molecules within the switch. The interior cathode surface is provided with a coating formed from chromium or a chromium mixture. Chromium combines a high rate of secondary electron emission with low sputtering and other advantageous properties for plasma switch operation. Various types of chromium-plated perturbations are described.

An optical light valve system (10) for providing an amplified phase conjugated replica (S1*) of a potentially low intensity phase aberrated optical signal beam (S1) is disclosed herein. The optical light valve system (10) of the present invention includes a reference beam source (17) for providing a coherent reference beam (R) having first and second components of first and second polarization states, respectively. Further included is a signal beam source (15) for providing a coherent signal beam (S) of the first polarization state. An improved optical light valve (20) phase conjugates the second component of the reference beam in response to the aberrated beam (S1*).
Abstract:
An arrangement for packaging an active millimeter wave device is provided having an active solid state diode (18) mounted on a cylindrical shaped heat sink pedestal (12). The cap (24) for the diode is an elongated cylindrical conductor which also serves as a portion of the center coaxial conductor and DC bias pin. A conductive annular ring (28) is also mounted on the pedestal encircling the diode and serves as the outer coaxial conductor for the coaxial transmission line structure. Advantageously the coaxial transmission line, namely the center and outer conductors, can be precisely assembled in relation to the diode for improved impedance characteristic and efficient energy coupling. Furthermore, the elongated cap (24) moves the point of contact with the bias pin (36) to a region of higher RF impedance, reducing RF losses.
