    Abstract: In a server providing access for multiple users to the World Wide Web, selected pages from periodically updated Web sites are precached. Pages linked to the home page for a Web site which are likely to be accessed by a user are retrieved and stored on the server. In response to offline browsing requests by subscribers to the Web site, the pages or portions of pages which are not already present in a subscriber's system are prioritized by likelihood of being accessed utilizing statistical information, link relationships, and/or content. The pages or pa ge portions most likely to be accessed are compressed and transmitted to the subscriber, thus minimizin g the connection time required and maximizing the number of subscribers which may be updated.

    Abstract: A system manipulates molecules using a set of proximal probes such as those used in atomic force microscopes. An electrostatic pattern is placed on a set of proximal probes such that each proximal probe may exert an electrostatic force. A molecule is captured using those electrostatic forces, after which the molecule can be manipulated while the molecule remains captured by the proximal probes. The electrostatic pattern can be modified such that the molecule moves and/or rotates over the set of proximal probes while the molecule remains captured by the set of proximal probes. The electrostatic pattern can be used to bend or split the molecule while the molecule remains captured by the set of proximal probes, thereby allowing the system to engage the molecule in chemical reactions, e.g., to act as a synthetic catalyst or a synthetic enzyme.

A user mouse selection of one of the destination points within the graphic object is received, and in response, a selected image is copied into the web page at the selected destination point. The selected image is mapped to the one of the destination points in the transfer map.

    Abstract: The term "pervasive" is applied to devices to which processing and communication capabilities have been added, but which are not considered to be traditional computers, e.g. cellular phones, vending machines, traffic lights, parking meters and the like. Such devices are able to generate requests for data and transmit the requests to other devices. A device which holds the requested data will, on receipt of the request, transmit the data to the requesting device, where the data is extracted and stored. The requesting device may be a digital camera which requests data as to its present location, and it may receive this data from an in-vehicle computing device having a global positioning system (GPS). The types of data exchanged may be classified using a system of code identifiers, such that devices may be programmed to identify transmitted data bearing certain codes which are of interest to the device user.
