Abstract: Novel alkali-resistant cellulases which have an optimum pH at a neutral region and have a high relative activity in an alkaline region are produced by microorganisms belonging to the genus Bacillus and growing in neutral medium. The cellulases suffer little inhibition by means of detergent ingredients such as surface active agents, proteinases and chelating agents. Therefore, they can be conveniently used as one of ingredients for detergent compositions.

These alkaline cellulases are rarely inhibited by ingredients ordinarily incorporated in detergents such as surface active agents, proteinases and chelating agents, so that they can be conveniently used in detergent compositions.

Abstract: A novel acidic heteropolysaccharide which comprises as its structural units arabinose, mannose, galactose, glucuronic acid, and xylose, at a specific ratio. The polysaccharide can be prepared by culturing a callus induced from a plant belonging to the genus Polianthes L. in a culture medium containing plant hormones. The polysaccharide can be used as a compoinent of agents for external application and detergents, and provides good moisturizing effects and a smooth, satisfying feeling upon use. When formulated in detergents, they produce remarkable improvement in a clean, rich feeling upon use.

The alkaline cellulase K gene is derived from a bacterial strain which belongs to the genus Bacillus and is alkalophilic, that is, capable of revealing an optimum growth in an alkaline pH region.

Abstract: Novel alkaline cellulase K, CMCase I and CMCase II are obtained by isolation from a culture product of Bacillus sp KSM-635. These enzymes stably work in a wide range including an alkaline side, and their activity is shown even at low temperatures. Further, they have a strong resistance to surfce active agents, chelating agents and proteinases. Therefore, they can be effectively utilized not only as an additive for clothing detergents, but also as a biomass and in other fields.
