Abstract: A virtual dial-up service is provided via multiple Internet Service Provides (ISPs). In particular, a remote user accesses the virtual dial-up service by establishing a connection to a serving ISP. The Serving ISP establishes a first tunnel to an anchor ISP. The latter establishes a tunnel to, e.g., a private intranet. As a result, a virtual private network (VPN) service is provided that enables remote access, via multiple tunnels, to a private network.

Abstract: Multilink PPP is enhanced to provide for a more flexible quality of service (QoS) support in a wireless environment. Abstract: Two-way resource reservation techniques for use in UMTS and other telecommunication systems. A determination is made as to whether a user requires resource reservations in both an uplink direction and a downlink direction within the system, and if the user requires such two-way resource reservations, a two-w ay protocol is implemented to establish the required resource reservations. The two-way protocol integrates resource negotiation procedures for both the uplink direction and the downlink direction so as to ensure that the required resource reservatio ns are provided for both directions. The two-way protocol may be a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) based on a Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) resource negotiation procedure. The determination may be based on one or more flag bits which identify whether the user requires resource reservations for both the uplink and downlink directions. The flag bits may be associated with a Quality of Service (QoS) Information Element (IE) of the system, and may be used to permit the user t o select between application of the two-way protocol and application of a one-way protocol.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for providing acce ss priority in a MAC protocol of a communications system such as, for example, with respect to UMTS RACH. Particularly, the invention introduces several access priority methodologies including: (i) random chip delay access priority (RCDAP); (ii) random backoff based access priority (RBBAP); (iii) variable logical channel based access priority (VLCAP); (iv) UMTS-specific variable logical channel based access priority (VLCAP'); (v) probability based access priority (PBAP); and (vi) retransmission based access priority (REBAP). Each methodology associates some parameter or parameters to access priority classes in order to influence the likelihood of a remote terminal completing a successful access request to a base station.

Abstract: The power level for uplink data transmission in a wireless communications network utilizing an on-demand multiple access method with a fair queuing service discipline (ODMAFQ) for efficient utilization of the limited bandwidth available in the wireless network is established during the initial access request message. The power level in a wireless network having a base station and several remote hosts is established by first transmitting a short connection request message to the base station from one of the remote hosts at an initial power level that is set relative to the nominal open loop power level. If the first remote host's transmission is unsuccessful, the power level is incremented by a power increment amount that may be predetermined, and the steps of transmitting and incrementing are repeated until the transmission from remote host to base station is successful. Finally, the power level at which transmission is successful is stored and used for further data transmission between that particular remote host and the wireless network base station.

Abstract: A Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) receiver performs a receiver initiat ed recovery algorithm (RIRA) when the number of lost or out-of order payload packets exceed a predetermined value. In particular, the receiver maintains a number of variables: the "next sequence number expected to be received" (Sr) value, and Snl, whic h stores the value of the currently received "next sent" (Ns) sequence number from the latest received packet. When the value of Snl > Sr + adjustment, the receiver portion res ets the value of Sr to the value of Snl and passes all packets to the upper layer of the protocol stack. The value of the adjustment variable represents the number of packets that may b e dropped or out-of order at the receiver before the receiver initiates recovery. The receiver also sends (either via piggybacking or a zero-length message) an ACK packet to inform t he sender of the new Sr value at the receiver.

Abstract: A wireless data network includes a wireless packet switched data network for end users that divides mobility management into local, micro, macro and global connection handover categories and minimizes handoff updates according to the handover category. The network integrates MAC handoff messages with network handoff messages. The network separately directs registration functions to a registration server and direct routing functions to inter-working function units . The network provides an intermediate XTunnel channel between a wireless hub (also ca lled access hub AH) and an inter-working function unit (IWF unit) in a foreign networ k, and it provides an IXTunnel channel between an inter-working function unit in a foreign network and an inter-working function unit in a home network. The networ k enhances the layer two tunneling protocol (L2TP) to support a mobile end system, and it performs network layer registration before the start of a PPP communication s ession.

Abstract: In a method for controlling admission of remote hosts to a base station in a wireless communications network based on usage priority, there are at least two user priority classes and the base station admits a threshold number of remote hosts of the lower priority class and a maximum total number of remote hosts. When a base station receives a connection request from a new user of the higher priority class, if the current total number of admitted users is less than the maximum allowable, the new user of class is admitted, otherwise, the base station checks to see if any lower priority class users are currently admitted and allow disconnection. If so, the base station disconnect the lower priority user and admits the new user. In one embodiment, the base station disconnects the "least recently used" admitted lower priority user that allows disconnection. If it is appropriate to disconnect lower priority users after they are admitted, then lower priority users are admitted as long as the total number of associated users is less than the maximum allowable admitted users. If it is inappropriate to disconnect lower priority users after they are admitted, then lower priority users are admitted only if the number of admitted users is less than the maximum number of total admitted users and the number of lower priority admitted users is less than the maximum allowable admitted number. This approach can be extended to multiple priority classes. In an alternate embodiment, lower priority class users are admitted if the total number of currently associated users of all classes is less than a second threshold, normally lower than the threshold for higher priority users, rather than being based partially (as a second threshold) on the number of currently associated users of that lower priority class.
