    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternative encoding mechanism based on a variable length protocol data unit(PDU) providing a more efficient encoding for a byte/bit synchronous transport medium than a block encoded format. SOLUTION: A fiber channel(FC) signal representative of block encoded data is provided to a block decoder. The block decoder removes block encoding from the data. The data is provided to an SDL(simplified data link) protocol encoder. The SDL protocol encoder maps the data to an SDL protocol packet for the purpose of transmission through an SONET(Synchronous Optical Network).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a multi-link PPP so that it can provide a more flexible quality of service(QoS) support in a wireless environment. SOLUTION: The multi-link PPP is enhanced so that it can provide a more flexible quality of service(QoS) support in a wireless environment. The multi-link PPP is especially enhanced so that a packet interface or a packet end point can send a message to an opposed PPP pier. Then the message identifies the number of classes and a type on a specific PPP link. Two new message are defined for use in an IP control protocol(IPCP) phase for the multi-link PPP connection. That is, the messages are an 'unshared QoS negotiation' option message and a 'QoS enhanced multi-link header format' option message.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To insure service quality for IP network transmission traffic. SOLUTION: An IP network path used for IP packet transmission between a transmission side edge device and a destination edge device is identified, and bandwidth is virtually supplied to voice traffic. It is secured to meet voice delay requirement of a high priority by allowing a connection request for a new voice call based on residual free capacity after giving a priority to a voice packet. Also, a VP server 230 maintains data about bandwidth capacity of each path segment in an IP network 205, the data of the bandwidth is supplied to a signaling gateway 250, it is allowed or rejected based on the quantity of empty bandwidth, and the decision of permission or rejection is notified to the transmission side edge device. Thus, guarantee about allowable delay and jitters can be attained without having to directly send a signal to respective IP routers constituting the IP network path.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a simple point-to-point data link protocol(SDL) based on the use of a length indicator field and an error check field not on the use of a flag to recover a packet border in a receiver. SOLUTION: An SDL transmitter 105 sends an SDL packet consisting of a header and a PDU (payload) of a variable length. The header consists of a length indicator (L1) field, a type field and a cyclic redundancy check CRC field. A receiver 150 blocks a packet as a function of the LI field to conduct self-synchronization as functions of the LI field and the header CRC field, that is, recovers the packet. In the recovering the packet especially, the receiver 150 applies CRC check to each reception SDL packet header and declares synchronization after the check by N times (e.g. N=4) is correct.

    Abstract: Multilink PPP is enhanced to provide for a more flexible quality of service (QoS) support in a wireless environment. In particular, multilink PPP is enhanced to enable a packet interface, or packet endpoint; to transmit a message to an opposite P PP peer, where the message identifies the number, and type, of classes on a particula r PPP link. Two new messages are defined for use in the IP control protocol (IPCP) phase of a multilink PPP connection: a "non-Sharing QoS Negotiation" option message, an d a "QoS-Enhanced Multilink Header Format" option message.
