    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a porous molded article made of a water-insoluble alginic acid metal salt having minute voids, in high efficiency, by adding a water-soluble alginic acid salt to an aqueous solution of polyvinyl methyl ether and insolubilizing the alginic acid salt in the solution. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of (A) an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt, preferably sodium salt of alginic acid and (B) an aqueous solution of polyvinyl methyl ether is introduced in the form of desired shape (e.g. fiber, film, etc.) into (C) an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of a metal (preferably calcium chloride or copper sulfate) capable of forming an insoluble salt with alginic acid maintained at a temperature above the phase-transition temperature of the component B to effect the micro-phase separation between the components A and B and, at the same time, the formation of a formed article of insoluble metal salt of alginic acid. The formed article is introduced into water maintained at a temperature lower than the phase-transition temperature of the component B to hydrate the component B again and allow to elute from the molded article. Minute voids are formed in the molded article by this process to obtain the objective molded article.
