    Abstract: Prodn. of mixts. of hydroxyalkyl sulphonates HO.CRH.SO3Z (I) (R are each H or aliphatic gp.; Z is alkali) and glycols HO.CRH.CRH.OH (II) contg. 0.6 wt.% (II) on (I) comprises first reacting the corresp. alkylene oxide (III) with ZHSO3 in the presence of solvents. The liq. reaction mixt. at 30-100 degrees C is then atomised under a pressure of 100-150 bar to droplets of mean dia. 1-100 mu m, and the droplets heated in air/or inert gas at 150-390 degrees C/0.05-2 bar. (I) are starting materials for textile auxiliaries and cleaners, e.g. domestic washing powders, liq. cleaners and soaps. Yields space-time yields and purity are improved, esp. the content of (II), which causes skin irritations and gives a hygroscopic prod., is lower than that in other processes.

In examples the following monomers are copolymerized (1) vinylidene chloride/ethyl acrylate, (2) nbutyl acrylate / acrylonitrile / styrene / N,N- dimethyl aminoethyl acrylate (in sulphuric acid) and (3) vinylidene chloride/n-butyl acrylate / N - vinyl - N - methylimidazolium methosulphate.

    Abstract: High purity products are obtained and formation of polyglycols is suppressed by reacting OH-contg. aromatic cpds. or carboxylic acids with 1,2-epoxides (e.g. ethylene oxide) in the presence of a betaine-type salt of an oxidic sulphur acid having the general formula: (in which X is N, S or P; R1, R2 and R3 (the latter is absent when X is S) denote the same or different, opt. substd. alkyls, aryls, hydroxyalkyls or aralkyls; R is a divalent, opt. substd. 1-10C alkylene gp.; and Y is a sulphito, sulphato, sulphonato, thionamato or sulphamato gp.; R1 and R2 may form a heterocyclic ring with N). The products are used as textile auxiliary agents; printing paste components; starting materials for polyesters; comonomers for vinyl polymerisation.

    Abstract: sulphates of formula: where the R's may be the same C5-6-cycloalkyl, C7-12 aralkyl, Ph or COOH opt. substd. with non-reacting groups e.g. alkyl or alkoxy, are prepd. by reaction of 1,2-alkylene oxides with SO2 (liquid), then with SO3 at -72 degrees to -10 degrees and distilling off excess SO2. Mixtures of SO2 and SO3 may be used and the process may be made continuous. The products have uses as intermediates for washing agents, textile auxiliaries, pesticides, emulsifying and dispersing agents, flotation auxiliaries; and in the prepn. of sulphobetaines.
