    Abstract: The invention relates to a polypropylene-based bumper system comprising a bumper support A (1) comprising glass fibre-reinforced polypropylene, an energy-absorbing foam core B (2) comprising foamed polypropylene, and a tough shell C (3) which comprises EP rubber-modified polypropylene and may, if desired, be painted. The bumper system can be recycled by mechanical comminution, extrusion and granulation. The granules can be used to produce injection mouldings having good mechanical properties.

    Abstract: Heat-insulating compositions are made by mixing porous plastic particles with an inorganic binder consisting of a suspension of water-containing particles of alkali metal silicate and inorganic fillers in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, and solidifying at a temperature above >0 DEG C. but below that at which the plastic sinters. Solidification can be assisted by extracting water down to a content of 20%, by treatment with carbon dioxide, or by the application of pressure. The porous plastic may be polyurethane, polystyrene, copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, or butadiene, vinyl chloride, or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Flame retardants such as inorganic halogen compounds or mixtures of chloroparaffins and antimony trioxide may be included. The alkali metal silicate powder is preferably sodium silicate containing 16-20% water and having an Na2O/SiO2 ratio of 1:2.0 to 1:4.0. The solution is of 15-60 DEG Be1 concentration, and the total water content varies between 25 and 75% of the weight of the silicate. Magnesia, talc, calcium carbonate, powdered asbestos, glass, quartz, zinc carbonate, sodium silicofluoride, or silica gel can be used as fillers in the ratio of 1:1 to 4:1 relative to the anhydrous silicate.

[Also in Division C3] Boards of thermal insulating material of low s.g. may be provided with an outer layer of, e.g. metal, plastics or wallpaper, or laminated with asbestos sheets on both sides, or with an asbestos sheet on one side and plasterboard on the other side. The insulating materials are made by mixing (a) porous plastics particles with an aqueous solution of (b) an alkali metal silicate to which has been added (c) a substance which reacts with (b) to form insoluble compounds, (c) being tetrachlorophthalic acid, an alkali metal borate, an organic ester, an organic anhydride, a silicofluoride, a borofluoride, or ZnO or mixtures thereof in an amount such that at least 10% of the silicic acid content of (b) is precipitated; the mixture is then consolidated to form a compact moulding. (a) may be expanded polystyrene or a closed-cell polyurethane foam and up to 95% by volume may be present. (b) may be Na or K silicate. The mixture may also contain one or more fillers, e.g. talc, chalk, kaolin, glass powder, or quartz powder. It may also contain a fire retardant, e.g. inorganic halogen compounds, or mixtures of chloroparaffin powder and Sb 2 O 3 . The components may be mixed with cooling, e.g. at 5-20‹ C., and set at from room temperature to 90‹ C. The mixture may be compressed before consolidation by 10- 90% of the original volume. Reference is made to a process in which expandable particles are introduced into a mixture containing alkali metal silicate and are subsequently expanded.

Their flat surfaces are cut to form semi-circular channels (2) to fit round the pipes. The two bodies are welded together (3) at one edge, so that they can be brought together to form a hollow cylinder structure.
