Abstract: A polyamide-imide precondensate which is solid at room temperature, but is fusible and soluble in polar solvents. It is manufactured by first condensing 1 mole of diamine with 2 moles of tricarboxylic acid anhydride in a diol as the solvent, to give a diimide-dicarboxylic acid, then esterifying the diimide-dicarboxylic acid with the diol and finally effecting the polycondensation by adding 1 mole of diamine per mole of diester. The precondensate may be used, as a melt, as a solution in organic solvents or as an aqueous dispersion, for coating electrical conductors.

Abstract: Aq. polyesterimide dispersions contg. 20-60 wt.% polyesterimide as fine particles having particle size 5 mu, and opt. small amounts of flow control agents, dispersants and/or esterification catalysts, are prepd. by (1) breaking up a solidified melt of polyesterimide in dry condition at 100 degrees C to particle size 100 mu (2) grinding with water at 80 degrees C to particle size 5 (0.05-1.5) mu. Pref. used in prepn. of temp-resistant luting and impregnating compsns., for bonding and laminating foils, webs, papers and fibrous materials. Conc. dispersions are more easily processed than solns.; risk of fire is obviated.

Abstract: Aq. polyesterimide dispersions, contg. polyesterimide as fine solid particles, having particle sizes 5 mu, are prepd. by (1) precipitating an opt. esterification catalyst-contg. soln. of a polyesterimide precondensate in at least one cyclic ether having b. pt. >110 degrees C, at standard press., in water opt. contg. flow control agents, protective colloid and/or wetting agents; (2) largely removing the cyclic ether and (3) grinding the polyesterimide precondensate suspension obtd. to particle sixes 5 (0.05-1.5) mu. Pref. used for prepn. of temp-resistant impregnating and luting compsns., laminates and pre-pregs, e.g. for impregnating glass and polyacrylamide webs and for bonding foils, papers and webs. Dispersions having higher concns. are more easily processed than the solns. Risk of fire is obviated.
