Abstract: Preparation of a stable aqueous dispersion, or a stable water-dispersible dry powder, of xanthophylls, which comprisesa) preparing a molecularly dispersed solution of at least one xanthophyll, with or without an emulsifier and/or an edible oil, in a water-miscible organic solvent, or a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent, at above 30° C.,b) mixing this solution with an aqueous solution of a mixture of protective colloids,b1) in which the mixture comprises at least one low-molecular-weight protective colloid component and at least one high-molecular-weight protective colloid component, whose mean molecular weights differ by at least 10,000,b2) the solvent component being transferred to the aqueous phase and the hydrophobic phase of the xanthophyll being formed as a nanodispersed phasec) and if appropriate, to prepare a water-dispersible dry powder, freeing the resulting dispersion from the solvent and the water and drying it in the presence or absence of a coating material.

Abstract: In a process for producing a stable, aqueous dispersion or a stable, waterdispersible dry xanthophyll powder: (a) a molecular disperse solution of at least one xanthophyll, if required together with an emulsifier and/or an edible oil is produced in a water-miscible organic solvent or in a mixture of water and a water-miscible, organic solvent, at temperatures above 30 ~C; (b) this solution is mixed with an aqueous solution of a mixture of protective colloids; (b1) the mixture containing at least one low molecular protective colloid component and at least one high molecular protective colloid component whose molecular weights differ by at least 10,000; (b2) the solvent component being converted into the aqueous phase and the hydrophobic phase of the xanthophyll being produced as a nanodisperse phase; and (c) if required, the thus obtained dispersion is freed from solvent and water to produce a waterdispersible dry powder and dried, if required in the presence of a coating material.

Abstract: The preparation of a finely-divided carotinoid or retinoid suspension comprises dissolving the material in a volatile water-miscible organic solvent at 50-250 degrees C (optionally under increased pressure) within 10 seconds and then immediately mixing the solution with an aqueous medium at 0-90 degrees C in the absence of protective colloid and in the presence of a physiologically acceptable emulsifier. Also claimed is a finely-divided carotinoid or retinoid suspension free from protective colloid contains an emulsifier chosen from lecithin, mono-, di- or tri-glycerides of aliphatic (optionally acetylated) polycarboxylic acids (eg citric or tartaric acid) or ascorbyl palmitate.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing dry powders of one or severa l carotenoids, said method being characterised in that a) one or several carotenoids are suspended in an aqueous molecularly dispersed or colloidally dispersed solution of a mixture consisting of trehalose and at least one protein-containing protective colloid and b) the obtained suspension is transformed into a dry powder by separation of water and, optionally, additionally used solvents and by subsequent drying, optionally in the presence of a coating material.
