    Abstract: Prepn. (A) comprises partially oxidising aq. glyoxal using nitric acid to give (B) which is then reacted with components (A), (C) and (D) to give condensn. prods. (I). (A) is 1 mol. melamine, dicyandiamide, (thio)urea or a mixt., (B) is 0.5-12 mols. (w.r.t. total molar amt. of components (B)) mixt. of glyoxylic acid and glyoxal in the molar ratio of 5:95-95:5, (C) is 0-3 mols. condensable cpd. contg. at least one phenolic or alcohol hydroxy gp., and (D) is 0-3 mols. condensable cpd. contg. an amido or amino gp. or an alkali metal or ammonium salt. Pref. 30-70 wt.% HNO3 is used in the partial oxidn. of glyoxal at 40-90 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as leather tanning agents (claimed). Also claimed is a process using (I) as tanning agents. The prepn. of (I) is a cheap, simple reproducible process. In an example, 1.04 g. sodium nitrite was added to 435 g. aq. glyoxal (40 wt.%) and the obtd. soln. was heated to 70 deg.C with 128 g. HNO3 (65 wt.%) being added over 5 hrs. THe soln. was then heated for 12 hrs. at 90 deg.C and then cooled to 60 deg.C. 63 g. melamine were added and the soln. was stirred for 1 hr. at 60 deg.C to give a clear, light-yellow soln. which was then spray dried (160-100 deg.C) to give 232 g. white powder. The powder was found to contain 2.60 mMol/g. glyoxylic acid, 2.60 glyoxal, 0.20 oxalic acid, 0.12 formic acid and 0.03 nitrat
