    Abstract: In the prodn. of acicular alpha-Fe2O3 (I) by heating an alkaline aq. Fe(OH)3 suspension in the presence of organic cpd(s). (II) forming complexes with Fe-III ions to 80-250 deg.C, the novelty is that Fe(OH)3 modified with Sn-IV ions is used. The Fe(OH)3 is pref. modified with 10 power (-3) to 2 x 10 power (-2) mole Sn-IV salt/mole Fe-III salt. The Fe(OH)3 may also contain Cr-III and/or Al-III ions. The suspension pref. has pH 8.5-12. Pref. the filtered modified Fe(OH)3 ppte. is suspended and stirred in the presence of (II) at least once at not more than 100 deg.C and filtered again before heating.

    Abstract: The ferrite is formed by heating an alkaline, pH pref. 8.5-12, watery suspension of ferric-hydroxide, pref. after filtration and redispersion at 15-60 deg. C at least once, in soln. with at least one organic cpd., e.g. tartaric or citric acid, which forms complexes with ferric-ions. The reaction occurs, pref. after adding alpha-ferrite seedcrystals, in 2 steps with the first at 70-90 deg. C for 1/2 2 hours and the second consecutively for 20-60 hours at 90-100 deg. C. The alpha-ferrite is then converted into needle-shaped gamma-ferrite by reduction to magnetite and subsequent oxidation. Alternatively it can be converted into needle shaped magnetic crystals consisting essentially of Fe.
