    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal element which has the excellent stability of a bistable state, obviates the deviation in threshold value and can prevent seizure by specifying the pretilt angle and tilt angle of a ferroelectric liquid crystal and the angle of half the angle formed by the optical axes of the two stable states to a specific relation. CONSTITUTION:Insulating films 13a, 13b and oriented films 14a, 14b are laminated on substrates 11a, 11b coated with transparent electrodes 12a, 12b. The ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal is disposed between the substrates 11a and 11b. The distance between the substrates 11a and 11b is set small and the ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 15 generates the bistable orientation state. The ferroelectric liquid crystal has the orientation state expressed by alpha>H if the pretilt angle of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 15 of such constitution is designated as alpha and the tilt angle as H. In addition, the ferroelectric liquid crystal in this oriented state exhibits at least the two stable states and the thetaa which is half the angle formed by these optical axes and the tilt angle H of the ferroelectric liquid crystal has the relation H>thetaa>H/2.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the leakage of liquid crystal, etc. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel P1 in a state where an excessive liquid crystal 3a is stuck to the pouring port of the liquid crystal after pouring the liquid crystal is fixed to a chuck part 23. A pushing member 25 is heated to a temperature of about 90 deg.C by a heater part 20 in advance and a wiping cloth 24 is pushed on the excessive liquid crystal 3a by moving the member 25. After wiping the excessive liquid crystal 3a off with the wiping cloth 24, the pouring port of the liquid crystal is sealed to complete the liquid crystal panel. Since the excessive liquid crystal 3a is heated by the heater part 20 and its viscosity is lowered, the excessive liquid crystal 3a soaks into the wiping cloth 24 and is removed completely from the part of the pouring port of the liquid crystal. As a result, the pouring port of the liquid crystal can properly be sealed and the leakage of the liquid crystal, etc., due to incomplete sealing can be prevented.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to rapidly inject liquid crystals even the smectic liquid crystals are used and to obtain good orientation by injecting and cooling the liquid crystals heated to an isotropic phase while specifying the pressures of an aperture for injecting the liquid crystals, an aperture for discharging the excess liquid crystals in a cell and the effective optical modulation region of the cell. SOLUTION: A pair of substrates 11a, 11b are arranged to face each other and are provided with the aperture 3 for injecting the liquid crystals 10 and the aperture 4 for discharging the excess liquid crystals past the inside of the cell 1 in the positions facing each other. These substrates are stuck to each other by a sealing material 2. The stage for packing the liquid crystals 10 into the cell 1 is provided with (a) a period when the liquid crystals heated to the isotropic phase are injected from the aperture 3 in the state of P1 > P2 >=atm. pressure and (b) the period when the liquid crystals attain the isotropic phase and are cooled in the state of holding the liquid crystals until P1 to P3 attain P1 , P3 or above in the period (a) when the pressures of the aperture 3 and the aperture 4 are defined as P1 , P2 and the pressure in the effective optical modulation region 5 of the cell is defined as P3 .

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high contrast, high definition, high luminance and a large area by controlling the phase transition of a liquid crystal compsn. between substrates in such a manner that the temp. width in which a mixture state of an isotropic phase and a smectic phase is allowed is controlled to a specified range. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal compsn. is held between a pair of substrates each having an electrode and an orientation controlling layer. At least one of the orientation controlling layers is subjected to uniaxial orientation treatment. The liquid crystal compsn. shows phase transition from an isotropic phase to a smectic phase in this order during the temp. is decreased. The temp. width in which the phase transition of the liquid crystal compsn. between the substrates occurs and a mixture state of both phases is allowed is controlled to 0.1 to 3.5 deg.C. In this case, the ferroelectric liquid crystal element shows bistability in a SmC* phase (chiral smectic C phase) and its orientation state is formed by gradually cooling the liquid crystal from a liquid phase (isotropic phase). By controlling the temp. width to allow a mixture state of phases to 0.1 to 3.5 deg.C, production of defects in orientation can be decreased.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the occurrence of nonuniformity in rubbing and to suppress contrast and a driving margin from deterioratiing by performing rubbing processing in parallel with a thin transparent electrode and orthogonally to a thick transparent electrode. CONSTITUTION:Two oppositely disposed glass substrates 2a, 2b are provided, and plural zonal transparent electrodes 3a, 3b are formed on the substrates 3a, 2b. Fo example, a large number of electrodes 3a are provided in a stripe shape while keeping the width of 170mum and the gap of 30mum on the substrate 2a, and a large number of electrode 3b are provided in the strip shape while keeping the width of 100mum and the gap of 100mum on the substrate 2b. The rubbing processing is performed so as to be in parallel with the electrode 3b with thin electrode width, and to be orthogonal to the electrode 3a with thick electrode width. Thereby, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of rubbing nonuniformity due to the difference of abutting of rubbing cloth.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the ferroelectric liquid crystal device which prevents yellowing. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal device has a ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 and a pair of substrates 11a, 11b which face each other by holding this ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 in-between, are formed with electrodes for applying voltages to the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 respectively on the opposite surfaces and are subjected to uniaxial orientation treatments in order to orient the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14. The apparent tilt angle of the liquid crystal device is made larger than in the case of not applying AC by the treatment to apply the AC to the element. The inclination directions of this liquid crystal and at the boundary between the substrates are the same and the pretilt angle is =25nC/cm .
