    Abstract: A base station implementing physical layer automatic repeat request includes a transmitter (38) and a receiver (52). The transmitter has a physical layer transmitter for receiving data, format the received data into packets transmitting the packets and retransmitting packets in response to failure t o receive a corresponding acknowledgment for a given packet; an acknowledgment receiver (56) for receiving the corresponding acknowledgment; and an adaptiv e modulation and coding controller for collecting retransmission statistics an d adjusting the particular data encoding/modulation using the collected statistics. The receiver (52) has a physical layer receiver for demodulating the packets; a combiner/decoder (50-1-50-n) for buffering, decoding and detecting packet errors; and an acknowledgment generator for generating an acknowledgment for each packet if that packet has an acceptable error rate.

    Abstract: Several methods are provided for communicating emergency call capability information between a station and an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network. The methods include advertising by the AP of its emergency call capabilities and announcing by the station of its emergency call capabilities. The AP can advertise its emergency call capabilities in a beacon frame, a probe response frame, a reassociation response frame, or a reauthentication response frame. The station can announce its emergency call capabilities in an association request frame, a reassociation request frame, an authentication request frame, or a reauthentication request frame.

    Abstract: Un método para ajustar la modulacion de datos en una estacion baso, método que comprende: recibir datos en bloques de datos desde un mecanismo ARQ de capa superior en un transmisor para la transmision; formatear los datos recibidos en paquetes para la transmision, siendo los paquetes de menor tamano que los bloques de datos, y teniendo cada paquete un tipo de codificacion/modulacion de datos particular; adjuntar una secuencia de control de errores para cada paquete; proveer un mecanismo ARQ de capa superior que realice los pasos que incluyen: transmitir los paquetes; almacenar los paquetes para retransmision en una memoria intermedia (buffer) incorporada al transmisor; monitorear un canal de retorno por la recepcion de una confirmacion para cada paquete de que el paquete ha sido recibido; limitar el numero de retransmisiones a un valor entero definido por el operador; liberar la memoria intermedia después que se alcanzo el valor entero; y retransmitir un paquete original o modificado selectivamente en el transmisor en respuesta a un fracaso en la recepcion de una confirmacion correspondiente para un paquete dado; en donde el mecanismo ARQ de capa superior comprende un transmisor de capa física que opera de manera transparente con respecto al mecanismo ARQ de capa superior; recibir una confirmacion correspondiente para un paquete dado, en donde un mecanismo configurado para recibir la confirmacion correspondiente para el paquete dado opera de manera transparente con respecto al mecanismo ARQ de capa superior; recoger estadísticas de retransmision y ajustar la codificacion/modulacion de datos particular usando las estadísticas recogidas; acumular, decodificar, y detectar errores en paquetes; y generar una confirmacion para cada paquete recibido si ese paquete tiene un coeficiente de errores aceptable.
