Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying a sulfonate salt in a high purity, capable of easily and highly removing impurities which may act as cross-linking agents, when the sulfonate salt is used as a sulfonating agent. SOLUTION: This method for highly purely purifying a sulfonate salt selected from among a vinyl sulfonate salt and a 1-5C halogenoalkane sulfonate salt whose hydroxyl group may be replaced comprises washing off with a solvent a trace amount of impurities which may act as cross-linking agents in a reaction wherein the sulfonate salt is used as a sulfonating agent. A method for producing a polysaccharide derivative replaced by hydrophobic groups and hydrophilic groups comprises reacting a polysaccharide or its derivative with a hydrophobic group-introducing agent and a sulfonating agent. Therein, the sulfonating agent obtained by the above purification method is used as the sulfonating agent.

The compounds A and B may be crosslinked with a polyol polyglycidyl ether. In the above formulas, X and Y are each a 2-3C oxyalkylene; (l) and (m) are each 0-20; Z is CH2 CH(OH)CH2 O, CH2 CH(OH) or CO; R is a 6-40C alkyl, or alkenyl; K is a 1-5C alkylene which may have OH as a substituent; (n) is 0 or 1; M is H, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium group or a substituted ammonium group.

SOLUTION: This new polysaccharide derivative comprises a polysaccharide or its derivative a part or all of hydrogen atoms of hydroxide groups of which is replaced with either group (A): a 10-40C alkyl, alkenyl or acyl group in which OH may be replaced, and COO or OCO may be inserted therein, or (B): a 1-5C sulfoalkyl group in which OH may be replaced, or a salt of them, and respective average degrees of substitution per constitutional monosaccharide moiety are 0.001-1.0 for group (A) and 0.01-2.0 for group (B).
