    Abstract: The connector assembly includes a projection on one shield half between the housing shell engaging end and the rear cable engaging end. A device is provided for defining a pivot region on the other shield half between the housing shell engaging end and the rear cable engaging end interengaging the projection and about which the shield halves pivot relative to one another between the initial and final positions in order to increase the force of engagement between the housing shell engaging ends and the conductive housing shell upon rotating the shield halves between the initial and final positions. Shell engaging members project forward from the housing shell engaging ends of the shield halves and are engageable beneath inwardly projecting lip of the shell. The projection protrudes into an aperture in the other shield half, a base portion of the projection being wider than the width of the aperture.

    Abstract: A retention system is provided for an electrical connector mountable to a substrate such as a printed circuit board. A dielectric housing has electrical terminals mounted therein, and the housing is adapted for mounting on a surface of the circuit board with the terminals establishing electrical connection to appropriate circuits on the board. The housing includes at least one mounting portion projecting generally parallel to the board in proximity to the surface thereof. A generally U-shaped hold-down clip has a bight portion spanning proximal ends of a pair of leg portions. The leg portions are configured for depending generally along opposite sides of the mounting portion of the housing, with feet portions at distal ends of the leg portions for surface mounting to the surface of the printed circuit board. A complementary interengaging retaining system is provided between the bight portion of the hold-down clip and the mounting portion of the housing for retaining the clip thereon.

    Abstract: When a contact structure is moved from an initial position to a final position, each of the forwardly extending lead-in portions of the male terminal is effective to gradually and uniformly deflect a respective one of the contact portions of the spring arms. The normal force between the contact portions of the spring arm and the upper and lower surfaces of the male terminal is caused to gradually increase. The lead-in portion of the male terminal has a pair of diverging, non-parallel generally non-deflecting split beams. Inwardly facing, laterally offset, opposing camming portions are adapted to initially engage and gradually deflect the contact portions as the contact structure is moved toward its final position. The gradual and uniform deflection of the contact portions of the spring arms results in a minimal insertion force mating contact structure. The gradual increase in normal force results in a high contact normal force between the male and female terminals. Greater wiping action over a greater length of the conductor is achieved.

    Abstract: A system is disclosed for terminating the shield of a high speed cable having an outer jacket and an inner metallic shield with a portion of the outer jacket removed to expose a portion of the metallic shield. The system includes a conductive two-part terminating member including a cable receiving part and a terminal part. The cable receiving part includes a receptacle for receiving the high speed cable in direct engagement with the exposed metallic shield thereof. A solder connection is applied between the exposed metallic shield and the cable receiving part at the receptacle. The terminal part is adapted for grounding the metallic shield. The cable receiving part is mounted on the terminal part in conductivity therewith.
