Abstract: In the playback of a video disc record employing an FM carrier recording format, a defect compensation system is provided which substitutes delayed video signals for current video signals when a defect is encountered. A phase locked loop including a phase detector and a voltage controlled oscillator is employed in FM detection circuits. A defect detector compares the phase between the oscillator output signal and a signal corresponding to the recovered signal. When the phase difference between these two signals exceeds a certain value, a defect signal is generated to disable the normal signal path of the recovered signal so that the delayed version of the video may be substituted for the current video for the duration of the occurrence of the defect.

Abstract: 1360626 Transistor oscillators; automatic frequency control RCA CORPORATION 16 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 33530/71 Headings H3A and H3T A frequency controlled oscillator comprises a bistable circuit 72, 73 feeding an integrator 77, 78, 79, the output from the integrator being fed back to provide set and reset signals for the bi-stable via a threshold arrangement 71 which provides a reset signal when the integrator output level is equal to a reference level, and a set signal when the integrator output is equal to the frequency control voltage level. When capacitor 77 is discharged, transistor 71 is off, and cross-coupled transistors 72, 73 are on. When capacitor 77 has charged to a first predetermined threshold, transistor 77 conducts and transistors 72, 73 turn off. Capacitor 77 now discharges to a lower threshold at which 71 turns off and 72, 73 turn on. The turn on point of 72 is varied by a transistor 74 to which a control voltage is applied. The arrangement is used in a television timebase synchronizing, the control signal being derived from a phase comparator 46, 48 which compares the received sync. signal and the oscillator signal.

Abstract: In memory-based video signal processing systems such as frame recursive filters, for example, system performance is dependent upon critical timing relationships between incoming signals and delayed signals produced from the memory. Video signal from various sources, e.g. VTR's, tend to have jittering time bases that generally have prevented the use of such memory-based processing systems. The jittering signals may be standardized, in sampled data format, by effecting adaptive signal delays responsive to a measure of the relative phase of the sampling clock with respect to horizontal synchronizing pulses. The phase measure is used to control an interpolator which combines successive samples in proportions to develop sample values that should have occurred at the sample times had the signal not been jittering.

Abstract: A digital input signal to be delayed is applied to a two-point linear interpolation filter which imparts delay to the signal proportional to the value of a delay control signal. Errors in both the amplitude and the phase of the delayed signal are minimized by the addition of a correction signal to the delayed signal. The correction signal is provided by applying the input signal to a further filter and a multiplier connected in cascade. The further filter is a linear phase filter having a response zero at zero frequency and a delay equal to an add multiple of one-half of the sampling period, Ts, of the digital input signal. The multiplier is controlled so as to vary the amplitude of the compensating signal as a non-linear function of the delay control signal so as to provide maximum amplitude compensation at delays corresponding to odd multiples of Ts/2 and zero amplitude compensation at delays equal to integer multiples of Ts.

Abstract: A pix-in-pix display includes a filtering system for processing the video signals which produce the reduced-size image. The filtering system includes an anti-aliasing filter - (210) which reduces the amplitude of the components of the video signals which may cause aliasing distortion when the image is subsampled. However, the filter passes substantial amounts of these components. The filtered video signal is subsampled (212) and applied to a peaking filter (220) which amplifies the band of frequencies containing the aliasing components relative to lower frequency bands to improve the appearance of detailed portions of the reproduced image.

Abstract: A pix-in-pix television display includes circuitry for reducing the amount of memory needed to hold one field of the reduced size image. In the display apparatus, digital samples representing the large and small picture signals are developed at substantially equal rates by separate circuitry. Subsampling circuitry stores one out of every five of the samples representing a horizontal line of the small picture. These samples are displayed, synchronous with the large picture at a rate three-fifths times the display rate of the large picture samples to produce an apparent size reduction of one-third in the horizontal direction.
