Abstract: A system for scanning a room (10) to find the location of target devices (14-16), and then locking onto them with stationary directed beams (26,26') for two-way communication. In one embodiment, a base system in each room comprises an IR source/receiver (18,19) combination plus an LCD display panel (20) which covers the source/receiver (18,19) and is addressed in such a way as to open up dynamic apertures (25) through which IR radiation in a scanning mode can be directed toward any particular location in the room (10). When a device (14,15) at that location senses that it is being irradiated by the base station, the targeted device responds by emitting a coded packet of IR pulses. This system takes advantage of the higher bandwidth communication that can be obtained with point-to-point communications, while still allowing for multiple devices at arbitrary locations in the same room.

Abstract: An acoustic ink printhead (10 min ) having improved ink drop ejection control includes a substrate (12) having an array of acoustic lenses (20) at its upper surface (22) for bringing rf acoustic waves to a predetermined focus, and a layer (50) of acoustically-reflective material of a thickness equal to an odd multiple of one quarter of the wavelength of the acoustic rf waves passing through it, the layer having openings corresponding to and aligned with each lens. Ink from an ink pool is allowed to couple acoustically to the lenses at each opening for receiving the focussed acoustic rf wave, while the layer acoustically isolates the interstitial regions between each lens by reflecting the acoustic rf waves incident on the upper surface of the substrate in those regions.

Abstract: An apparatus for pulse width modulation comprises a delaying means (DL1-DL32) which receives a pulse (IP) and creates a plurality of modulated pulses. The pulse (IP) has a first pulse edge (t1) and a second pulse edge (t2). The apparatus further comprises a lookup table (66) for storing individual delay data for each of said plurality of modulated pulses, which delay data is communicated from the lookup table (66) to the delaying means (DL1-DL32). The delaying means (DL1-DL32) is responsive to the delay data from the lookup table (66) to delay only the first pulse edge of each pulse.

Abstract: Methods for testing proper operation of drop ejection units in a multi-ejector system are provided to determine whether the drop ejectors have been properly filled and/or the ejectors are emitting fully formed droplets. The method include testing the ejectors prior to drop ejection. In this method, a priming system is ejected onto a test substrate to allow a scanner to determine the existence of the fluids at selected locations.
