Abstract:
An optical amplifier which includes an optical fiber having an erbium doped core surrounded by cladding, a pump for pumping the fiber with pump light at a pump wavelength coupled to the fiber, input means for inputting a signal to be amplified to the amplifier and output means for outputting an amplified signal from the amplifier. The fiber has a NA higher than 0.2. The difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the core adjacent the core/cladding interface and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the cladding at at least one radius less than 2 .mu.m from said interface is lower than a predetermined value, corresponding to a ratio of erbium loss to background loss, at said pump wavelength, and greater than a minimum ratio of about 20 when erbium loss is 0.15 dB/m and about 120 when erbium loss is 3.5 dB/m.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of forming a glass tube doped with boron and fluorine. A B.sub.2 O.sub.3 -doped tubular porous preform is heated, and a fluorine-containing gas is flowed into its aperture. The temperature is sufficiently high to cause the fluorine-containing gas to decompose and form fluorine which dopes the preform. Also flowed into the aperture is a sufficient amount of BF.sub.3 to prevent fluorine from reacting with the B.sub.2 O.sub.3 in the porous preform and forming a B.sub.2 O.sub.3 -depleted region near the aperture surface. The particles are then fused to form a fluorine-containing dense glass tube.

Abstract:
Preparation of halogen-doped silica is described. The preparation includes doping silica with high halogen concentration and sintering halogen-doped silica to a closed-pore state. The sintering includes a high pressure sintering treatment and a low pressure sintering treatment. The high pressure sintering treatment is conducted in the presence of a high partial pressure of a gas-phase halogen doping precursor and densifies a silica soot body to a partially consolidated state. The low pressure sintering treatment is conducted in the presence of a low partial pressure of gas-phase halogen doping precursor and transforms a partially consolidated silica body to a closed-pore state. The product halogen-doped silica glass exhibits little foaming when heated to form fibers in a draw process or core canes in a redraw process.
