Abstract: An apparatus for in-situ injection of one or more chemical components into a reaction chamber is disclosed, The apparatus includes a reaction chamber for receiving one or more libraries, each of the libraries comprising two or mor e samples. The reaction chamber is configured to form a sealed enclosure. The apparatus further includes an injection manifold supporting injectors for in - situ injection of one or more chemical components onto respective samples of the one or more libraries in the pressurized sealed reaction chamber.

Abstract: An apparatus for use in parallel reaction of materials. The apparatus includes a base (32) having a plurality of reaction wells, each of the reaction wells (30) having a closed lower end (84) and open upper end for receiving reactant materials. A cover (34) is configured for sealing engagement with the base to form a housing enclosing the plurality of reaction wells and defining a common pressure chamber (26) in communication with the reaction wells. The apparatus further includes a flow restriction device (92) positioned adjacent to the open ends of the reaction wells to provide communication between the reaction wells and the pressure chamber while reducing cross-talk between the reactants and an inlet port (70) in communication with the pressure chamber for supplying pressurized fluid to the chamber to pressurize the reaction wells. The housing is configured to sustain a pressure substantially above atmospheric pressure.

Materials that can be prepared using these methods are covalent network solids, ionic solids and molecular solids. Examples are inorganic, organometallic, intermetallic, ceramic, organic polymeric and composite materials. Once prepared, these materials can be screened for useful properties. Thus, the present invention provides for the parallel synthesis and analysis of novel material having useful properties

Abstract: Devices and methods for controlling and monitoring the progress and properti es of multiple reactions are disclosed. The method and apparatus are especially useful for synthesizing, screening, and characterizing combinatorial libraries, but als o offer significant advantages over conventional experimental reactors as well. The apparatus generally includes multiple vessels for containing reaction mixtures, and systems for controlling the stirring rate and temperature of individual reaction mixture s or groups of reaction mixtures. In addition, the apparatus may include provisions for independently controlling pressure in each vessel, and a system for injectin g liquids into the vessels at a pressure different than ambient pressure. In situ monitorin g of individual reaction mixtures provides feedback for process controllers, and also provid es data for determining reaction rates, product yields, and various properties of the reaction products, including viscosity and molecular weight. Computer-based methods a re disclosed for process monitoring and control, and for data display and analysis.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for screening diverse arrays of materials using infrared imaging techniques are provided. Typically, each of the individual materials on the array will be screened or interrogated for the same material characteristic. Once screened, the individual materials may be ranked or otherwise compared relative to each other with respect to the material characteristic under investigation. According to one aspect, infrared imaging techniques are used to identify the active sites within an array of compounds by monitoring the temperature change resulting from a reaction. This same technique can also be used to quantify the stability of each new material within an array of compounds. According to another aspect, identification and characterization of condensed phase products is achieved, wherein library elements are activated by a heat source serially, or in parallel. According to another aspect, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer is used to rapidly characterize a large number of chemical reactions contained within a combinatorial library.
