Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling and monitoring the progress and characteristics of more than one reaction for monitoring and controlling a process and displaying/analyzing data by using a computer. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes more than one vessel 102 for holding the reaction mixture and a system for controlling the rotation speed of a stirring blade 108 and the temperature of each reaction mixture or a group of the mixtures so as to be effective in the synthesis, screening and characterization of combined chemical library and further can include equipment for controlling independently pressures of respective vessels and a system for injecting a liquid to the vessel under the pressure other than the atmospheric pressure. Respective reaction mixtures are monitored, and monitored results are fed back to a process controller, then the data for deciding various characteristics including the reaction rate, product yield, viscosity and molecular weight of the reaction product can be obtained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method which is for controlling and monitoring the progress of plural reactions and the characteristics, particularly effective for the synthesis, screening and characterization of a combination chemical library and has important advantages as compared to the conventional experimental reactor. SOLUTION: A parallel reactor system 100 contains generally plural vessels 102 for holding reaction mixtures and a system for controlling the stirring speed and the temperature of the respective reaction mixtures or a group of the reaction mixtures of a reactor block 106 and can contain an equipment for controlling the pressure in each vessel individually and a system for injecting a liquid into the vessel under the pressure except the atmospheric pressure. The monitoring of each reaction mixture brings the feed back to a process controller and simultaneously gives data for deciding various characteristics of the reaction product, which includes the reaction rate, the product yield, the viscosity and the molecular weight.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parallel reactor system suitable for the handling of fluid substances containing slurry substance and to provide a method concerning the same. SOLUTION: The parallel reactor system is provided with a reactor 9, a vessel to be placed in the reactor and holding a reaction mixture and a cannula for introducing fluid reaction substances to the vessel. A robot system 23 enables the operation of inserting the cannula into a cannula path in the reactor 9 for conveying the reactant containing the slurry to a corresponding vessel and pulling off the cannula from the cannula path after the conveyance. The related method and the cannula design are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and system for researching and developing and/or optimizing new catalysts and products in a combinatorial manner is disclosed. The method begins with starting components or a ligand library and provides methods of creating catalyst or product libraries, which are then tested in a reaction of interest. The system uses methods of robotic handling for moving libraries from station to station. The method and apparatus are especially useful for synthesizing, screening, and characterizing combinatorial catalyst libraries, but also offer significant advantages over conventional experimental methods as well.

Abstract: A method for characterizing a polymer sample that includes the steps of withdrawing a polymer sample from a sample container into an injection probe of an auto- sampler where the probe is heated to maintain the withdrawn sample at a temperature of not less than about 75 degrees Celsius while resident in the probe. The heated injection probe resides in a first environment maintained at about ambient temperature while withdrawing the polymer sample. The method further includes loading at least a portion of the withdrawn sample into an injection port or a loading port of a liquid chromatography system where the injection port or loading port is adaptable for fluid communication with a chromatographic column. The chromatographic column resides in a heated second environment maintained at a temperature of not less than about 75 degrees Celsius. The loaded sample is injected into a mobile phase of the liquid chromatography system. The sample is maintained at a temperature but not les s than about 75 degrees Celsius during a period of time including from when the sample is withdrawn from the sample container to when the sample is within the heated second environment. The injected sample is chromatographically separated and a property of the sample or a composition thereof is detected.

Abstract: A method of preparing and delivering a slurry into a series of vessels in a reactor, said method comprising: (1) mixing a particulate solid material and a liquid dispersing medium and agitating the mixture to form a substantially homogeneous first slurry in which said particulate solid material is suspended in the liquid; (2) aspirating said first slurry into a cannula carried by a robot system while the slurry is substantially homogeneous; (3) operating the robot system to insert the cannula into the reactor;(4) delivering the slurry from the cannula into the vessel while the cannula is in said reactor; and (5) repeating (2)-(4) for a second vessel with said first slurry or repeating (2)-(4) for a second vessel with a second slurry.
