Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling and monitoring the progress and characteristics of more than one reaction for monitoring and controlling a process and displaying/analyzing data by using a computer. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes more than one vessel 102 for holding the reaction mixture and a system for controlling the rotation speed of a stirring blade 108 and the temperature of each reaction mixture or a group of the mixtures so as to be effective in the synthesis, screening and characterization of combined chemical library and further can include equipment for controlling independently pressures of respective vessels and a system for injecting a liquid to the vessel under the pressure other than the atmospheric pressure. Respective reaction mixtures are monitored, and monitored results are fed back to a process controller, then the data for deciding various characteristics including the reaction rate, product yield, viscosity and molecular weight of the reaction product can be obtained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method which is for controlling and monitoring the progress of plural reactions and the characteristics, particularly effective for the synthesis, screening and characterization of a combination chemical library and has important advantages as compared to the conventional experimental reactor. SOLUTION: A parallel reactor system 100 contains generally plural vessels 102 for holding reaction mixtures and a system for controlling the stirring speed and the temperature of the respective reaction mixtures or a group of the reaction mixtures of a reactor block 106 and can contain an equipment for controlling the pressure in each vessel individually and a system for injecting a liquid into the vessel under the pressure except the atmospheric pressure. The monitoring of each reaction mixture brings the feed back to a process controller and simultaneously gives data for deciding various characteristics of the reaction product, which includes the reaction rate, the product yield, the viscosity and the molecular weight.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring properties of a liquid composition includes a mechanical resonator, such as a thickness shear mode resonator or a tuning fork resonator, connected to a measurement circuit. The measurement circuit provides a variable frequency input signal to the tuning fork, causing the mechanical resonator to oscillate. To test the properties of a liquid composition, the mechanical resonator is placed inside a sample well containing a small amount of the liquid. The input signal is then sent to the mechanical resonator and swept over a selected frequency range, preferably less than 1 MHz to prevent the liquid being tested from exhibiting gel-like characteristics and causing false readings. The mechanical resonator's response over the frequency range depends on various characteristics of the liquid being tested, such as the temperature, viscosity, and other physical properties. Particular mechanical resonators, such as tuning fork resonators, can also be used to measure a liquid composition's electrical properties, such as the dielectric constant and conductivity, because the tuning fork's structure allows a high degree of electrical coupling between the tuning fork and the surrounding liquid. The mechanical resonator can be covered with a coating to impart additional special detection properties to the resonator, and multiple resonators can be attached together as a single sensor to obtain multiple frequency responses. The invention is particularly suitable for combinatorial chemistry applications, which require rapid analysis of chemical properties for screening.
