Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of anhydrous or substantially anhydrous formic acid. The process has the special feature that a liquid of the general formula Iwhere the radicals R and R are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, or R and R jointly, together with the N atom, form a heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring, and only one of the radicals is an aryl group, and where R is hydrogen or a C1-C4-alkyl group, employed as extractant is also employed as washing liquid for the offgases produced in the process.

Abstract: chemical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves distillation of initial medium in column and withdrawal of (i) pure ethylene oxide in liquid or gas state from the top section of column and through lateral tap-off disposed in the concentrating section of column and (ii) bottom product. In emergency situations, a fire-extinguishing means is supplied to the column. Process is characterized by that the distillation column is operated at pressure 2 to 10 bar and temperature from 20 to 180 C. Mixture is passed through several in-series disposed zones with structured metal sheet inserts or charge beds arranged within the column, from which at least one zone is connected to a water source. Water functions as ethylene oxide-miscible fire- extinguishing means, which raises pressure in the column by 0.01 to 4 bar. EFFECT: optimized process parameters. 8 cl, 1 dwg
