Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing n-butyraldehyde, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol and/or n-butanol from 1,3-butadiene-containing hydrocarbon streams, which comprises the following steps: a) reacting 1,3-butadiene with an amine of general formula (I) to form an amine of formula (II), whereby, in said formulae (I) and (II), the substituents R 1 and R 2 independently represent hydrogen or an appropriate organic radical from the group alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, monoalkylaminoalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, aryl and aralkyl, or R 1 and R 2 form a 3-to 7-membered heterocycle together with the nitrogen atom, which optionally comprises one or several double bonds and optionally one other heteroatom from the group N, O and S, in the presence of an amide of formula (III), in which R 3 and R 4 independently have the meaning indicated in the amines (I) and (II) for R 1 and R 2 and M represents an alkali metal; b) isomerizing the amine (II) to form an amine of formula (IV), in which R 1 and R 2 have the meaning indicated in the formulae (I) and (II) and c) releasing n-butyraldehyde as well as the amine of formula (I) by hydrolysis of said amine (IV) with water.

Abstract: Production of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate comprises reaction of isobutyraldehyde in the presence of an aqueous alkalimetal hydroxide, separation of the aqueous phase and reaction of at least a portion of the mixture with isobutyric acid under conditions of esterification to form 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate. Production of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate comprises: (A) reaction of isobutyraldehyde in the presence of an aqueous alkalimetal hydroxide as a basic catalyst, to give an organic phase comprising a mixture of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol, and an aqueous phase comprising the alkalimetal hydroxide and alkalimetal isobutyrate; (B) separation of the aqueous phase; (C) optional removal of a portion of the resulting mixture from the process and/or separation of the mixture into its components followed by optional removal of the separated 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate; (D) reaction of at least a portion of the mixture from step (B) with isobutyric acid under conditions of esterification to form 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate; and (E) optional recovery of the product.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for reducing the formation of polymers during the side chain alkylation or side chain alkenylation of alkylaromatic compounds by reacting olefins or diolefins in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst; and the ensuing distillation for preparing the alkylated or alkenylated compound. The alkali metal in the catalyst is situated on an inorganic carrier, and the catalyst is mechanically separated from the reaction mixture after the reaction and before distillation.
