Abstract: Production of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate comprises reaction of isobutyraldehyde in the presence of an aqueous alkalimetal hydroxide, separation of the aqueous phase and reaction of at least a portion of the mixture with isobutyric acid under conditions of esterification to form 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate. Production of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate comprises: (A) reaction of isobutyraldehyde in the presence of an aqueous alkalimetal hydroxide as a basic catalyst, to give an organic phase comprising a mixture of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol, and an aqueous phase comprising the alkalimetal hydroxide and alkalimetal isobutyrate; (B) separation of the aqueous phase; (C) optional removal of a portion of the resulting mixture from the process and/or separation of the mixture into its components followed by optional removal of the separated 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate; (D) reaction of at least a portion of the mixture from step (B) with isobutyric acid under conditions of esterification to form 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate; and (E) optional recovery of the product.

Abstract: Ester mixture comprises at least one ester of an aliphatic/aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid having alcohol components containing 10 carbons composed of 2-propylheptanol or alcohol mixture containing 10 carbons composed of 2-propylheptanol and at least an alcohol containing 10 carbons e.g. 2-propyl-4-methyl hexanol; and at least an ester of an aliphatic/aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid having alcohol component containing 6 carbons composed of n-hexanol or an alcohol mixture of n-hexanol and at least an alcohol containing 6 carbons e.g. 2-methylpentanol. Ester mixture comprises at least one ester of an aliphatic/aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid having 10C alcohol component composed of 2-propylheptanol or 10C alcohol mixture composed of 2-propylheptanol and at least one 10C alcohol such as 2-propyl-4-methyl hexanol, 2-propyl-5-methyl-hexanol, 2-isopropyl-heptanol, 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-hexanol, 2-isopropyl-5-methyl-hexanol and/or 2-propyl-4,4-dimethylpentanol; and at least one ester of an aliphatic or aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid having 6C alcohol component composed of n-hexanol or an alcohol mixture of n-hexanol and at least one 6C alcohol such as 2-methylpentanol and/or 2-ethylbutanol, where the aliphatic or aromatic di- or tricarboxylic acid is citric acid, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid or trimellitic acid. An independent claim is included for a polyvinyl chloride composition containing the ester mixture (1-100 phr).
