A fire resisting door has a frame work 1 of cement bound asbestos members with stiffening members 2 of strips of hardboard or wood-base material arranged crosswise to form cells and at least one thermally insulating layer 5 of cement bound asbestos and/or of alkali or sodium, silicate boards 6 containing glass fibres and water and which expand at temperatures above 250‹C and an outer metallic layer 7 of sheet steel or aluminium covering the layers 5 and/or 6 and secured thereto by an organic adhesive which looses its bonding properties to destroy the joint under the action of heat at temperatures of 60‹ to 400‹C e.g. epoxide resin and/or polyvinyl acetate and/or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate and/or acrylic ester, or by screws or rivets made of organic material such as mentioned above, or of Wood's metal or aluminium, or wood which are destroyed at the temperatures specified above, the edges of the door being covered with strips 8 of U- section aluminium. The gap between the strips 8 and the sheet steel plate 7 is filled with silicone rubber.

A cross-linked expanded polymer is produced by mixing, e.g. in an extruder, a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene with a vinyl ester of a saturated acid or an ester-of an ethylenically unsaturated acid in the plastic condition with a polyisocyanate and an expanding agent under such pressure that the copolymer is not expanded followed by decompression to allow expansion. The ethylene copolymer may contain units derived from vinyl acetate or acrylic acid and n-hexyl, ethyl or n- or tert-butyl acrylate. The polyisocyanate may be 4,4 1 - dicyclohexylmethane di-isocyanate or its 3,3 1 - dimethyl derivative; others are also exemplified. The expanding agent may be a mixture of iso- and n-butane and/or dichlorodifluoromethane, propane or neopentane or azodicarbonamide or p,p 1 - oxybenzene - sulphohydrazide. Talc may be used as a nucleating agent. The copolymer mixture may also contain polybutene, polyisobutylene or polypropylene and zinc oxide.

    Abstract: Heat-insulating compositions are made by mixing porous plastic particles with an inorganic binder consisting of a suspension of water-containing particles of alkali metal silicate and inorganic fillers in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, and solidifying at a temperature above >0 DEG C. but below that at which the plastic sinters. Solidification can be assisted by extracting water down to a content of 20%, by treatment with carbon dioxide, or by the application of pressure. The porous plastic may be polyurethane, polystyrene, copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, or butadiene, vinyl chloride, or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Flame retardants such as inorganic halogen compounds or mixtures of chloroparaffins and antimony trioxide may be included. The alkali metal silicate powder is preferably sodium silicate containing 16-20% water and having an Na2O/SiO2 ratio of 1:2.0 to 1:4.0. The solution is of 15-60 DEG Be1 concentration, and the total water content varies between 25 and 75% of the weight of the silicate. Magnesia, talc, calcium carbonate, powdered asbestos, glass, quartz, zinc carbonate, sodium silicofluoride, or silica gel can be used as fillers in the ratio of 1:1 to 4:1 relative to the anhydrous silicate.
