Abstract: The invention provides a process for autothermal catalytic steam reforming of hydrocarbons by passing a reactant mixture of hydrocarbons, oxygen and water or water vapour, heated to a preheating temperature, over a catalyst. The process is characterised in that it is operated adiabatically and the catalyst has a coating of a catalyst material on a support structure, the catalyst material containing at least one platinum group metal on an oxidic support material from the group comprising aluminium oxide, silico n dioxide, titanium dioxide or mixed oxides thereof and zeolites.

Abstract: The prodn. of 2,2'-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanes (BHPP) comprises reacting the corresp. phenols and carbonyl cpds. at 40-150 degrees C in presence of a formed acid catalyst consisting of a sulphonate gp.- and mercapto gp.-contg. organopolysiloxane (OFP) contg. units of formula (O3/2SiR'SO3)M(x+) (I) and O3/2SiR SH (III). In (I) and (III), R = 1-12C alkylene, 5-8C cycloalkylene or a gp. of formula -(CH2)n-Cyc-(CH2)m- or -(CH2)n-Phe-(CH2)m- (II) (with n, m = 0-6, i.e. the no. of Si- or S-linked CH2 gps.; Cyc = cyclohexylene; Phe = phenylene); M = H, opt. NH4, or a metal with a valency of x = 1-4; R = R . The free valencies of the O atoms attached to Si are taken up by the Si atoms of other gps. (I) and/or (II) and/or by the metal atom-oxygen gps. of crosslinking bridging gps. of formula SiO4/2 (IV) and opt. R''SiO3/2, R'SiO3/2, R'2SiO2/2, AlO3/2, R'AlO2/2, TiO4/2, R'TiO3/2 and R'2TiO2/2 (V). In (V) and (IV), R' = Me or Et; R" = Ph or 2-12C alkyl. The ratio of gps. Abstract: Method of performing alkylation or acylation reactions of aromatic substrates under supercritical or near-critical reaction conditions. In particular, a method of performing Friedel-Crafts alkylation or acylation reactions is disclosed under those conditions. Friedel-Crafts reactions may be effected using a hetero-geneous catalyst in a continuous flow reactor containing a super-critical or near-critical reaction medium. Selectivity of product formation can be achieved by varying one or more of the temperature, pressure, catalyst, flow rates and also by varying the ratios of aromatic substrate to acylating or alkylating agent.
