    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the storability and handleability of fatty acids by catalytically hydrogenating only carbon-carbon double bonds in the fatty acids and fatty acid derivatives by using a colloid of noble metal as a catalyst without using solvent. SOLUTION: Fatty acids and/or fatty acid derivatives are catalytically hydrogenated selectively under a hydrogen pressure up to 800 bar at maximum by using a catalyst that is a colloid of a single metal, binary or multiple metals selected from the group VIII or IB in the periodic table and is stabilized with a surfactant, for example, an amphoteric betain, or a solution catalyst prepared by dissolving the above-stated catalyst (the homogeneous catalyst) or, a heterogeneous catalyst, that are prepared by using previously formed single, binary or multi-metal colloid and their solutions and depositing them on a carrier. In a preferred embodiment, a bulk type carrier-supported catalyst is used to effect the catalytic hydrogenation reactions in a fixed bed reactor or in a tubular reactor.

    Abstract: The prodn. of 2,2'-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanes (BHPP) comprises reacting the corresp. phenols and carbonyl cpds. at 40-150 degrees C in presence of a formed acid catalyst consisting of a sulphonate gp.- and mercapto gp.-contg. organopolysiloxane (OFP) contg. units of formula (O3/2SiR'SO3)M(x+) (I) and O3/2SiR SH (III). In (I) and (III), R = 1-12C alkylene, 5-8C cycloalkylene or a gp. of formula -(CH2)n-Cyc-(CH2)m- or -(CH2)n-Phe-(CH2)m- (II) (with n, m = 0-6, i.e. the no. of Si- or S-linked CH2 gps.; Cyc = cyclohexylene; Phe = phenylene); M = H, opt. NH4, or a metal with a valency of x = 1-4; R = R . The free valencies of the O atoms attached to Si are taken up by the Si atoms of other gps. (I) and/or (II) and/or by the metal atom-oxygen gps. of crosslinking bridging gps. of formula SiO4/2 (IV) and opt. R''SiO3/2, R'SiO3/2, R'2SiO2/2, AlO3/2, R'AlO2/2, TiO4/2, R'TiO3/2 and R'2TiO2/2 (V). In (V) and (IV), R' = Me or Et; R" = Ph or 2-12C alkyl. The ratio of gps. (I):(III) = (10:1)-(1:10), the ratio of (I):(IV) = (1:3)-(1:20), and the ratio of (IV):(V) = (1:0)-(1:0.5). The required prod. is then isolated.
