Abstract: New 2-alkylsulphinyl-5-nitrothiazoles of formula (I): (where R1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R2 is 1-6C alkyl or 5-6C cycloalkyl). (I) can be used as agricultural or industrial bactericides and fungicides, e.g. as preservatives for paints, glues, sealing materials, cutting oils, wood, paper and textiles. They are esp. useful as seed dressings for protecting barley from attack by Helminthosporium gramineum, pref. in combination with a known fungicide active against Ustilago nuda. A typical cpd. is 2-ethylsulphinyl-4-methyl-5-nitrothiazole, which is e.g. prepd. by oxidising the corresp. 2-ethylthio cpd. with HNO3/H2SO4.
