Abstract: PURPOSE: To produce a new amide compound, hardly causing skin irritation, excellent in foaming properties, capable of imparting a favorable touch to the skin, etc., and useful as a base for a hair and a skin cosmetics, a detergent, an emulsifying agent, a conditioning agent, etc. CONSTITUTION: The amide compound of formula I [R is a (OH-substituted) 1-24C (branched) alkyl or an alkenyl; R is a (OH-substituted) 1-4C alkyl or an alkenyl; X is a halogen; (m) and (n) are each 1-6; (p) is 0-2], e.g. 4,12-bls(1- oxodecyl)-1,15-di(trimethylammonium)-4,12-diaza-8-oxypentadecane dichloride. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula R -CO-Y (Y is OH, an alkoxy or a halogen).

The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting an amine derivative of formula II with a halogenated hydrocarbon of the formula R -X in the presence of an alkaline agent (e.g. sodium carbonate) in an inert solvent (e.g. isopropyl alcohol and water) at 20-150 deg.C.
