Abstract: A removable cigarette (224') is manufactured for use in a smoking system which includes a lighter which has electrical heating means disposed in permanent cavity for delivering a flavored tobacco response to a smoker. To manufacture the cigarette a carrier web (259') is provided which has regions (261) of tobacco flavor material. Adhesive regions (261A) are applied from an adhesive applying station (327) to the surface of the carrier web (259') to form spaced regions of adhesive (261A) in between spaced regions of flavor material (261). A filter station (329) attaches filters (333,335) to the adhesive regions (261A) and a wrapping station (337) wraps the web (259') around the filters (333,335) to form a continuous rod of alternating regions of filter and tobacco flavor material. Finally, individual removable cigarettes (224') are formed by severing the continuous rod at a severing station (339).

Abstract: The presented smoking system is heated up by a passing current through a range of heating elements and a replaceable cigarette fixed into a burner, at the same time, tobacco odours and other components taking a form of vapours and aerosols created in the heating process are supplied to smoker. The cigarette and burner are made so that air gets into the smoking system through the cigarette sides. Such a supply of air flow enables it to supply odours and aerosol to the smoker and reduces condensation in the smoking system of vapours and aerosols that are present in the heating device.

Abstract: A process for making patterned wrapper paper applies an aqueous solution of oxidized starch material to a base web (10) of paper. The aqueous starch solution has a surface tension of at least about 65 dynes/centimeter, a pH i n the range of about 6 to about 6.5, a room temperature viscosity no greater than about 50 centipoises, and is prepared from particles sized in the rang e of about 4 to about 40 microns when dry and about 90% of which are sized i n the range of about 10 to about 100 microns when wet. The starch particles are capable of forming a solution with about 20% to about 24% oxidized starc h content. Any suitable printing technique can be used to apply the aqueous solution. The pattern of the wrapper may comprise bands (34), stripes (36), two-dimensional arrays, and the like. Moreover, the pattern can be applied i n one or more layers (40,42). The invention includes a cigarette having the wrapper.

Abstract: A smoking system (21) is provided in which a replaceable cigarette (23) containing tobacco flavor material is electrically heated by a set of electrical heater elements contained within a lighter (25 ) to evolve tobacco flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form for delivery to a smoker. The cigarette (23) and lighter (25 ) are adapted to provide air flow patterns through the smoking system such that air flows transversely into the cigarette (23). Suc h patterns improve aerosol and flavor delivery to the smoker and reduce the condensation of residual heater-region vapor/aerosol i n the smoking system.
