Abstract:
A machine (10) for folding and applying onserts onto consumer goods such as cigarette packs (14) comprises a continuous roll of preprinted onserts and a transverse cutter assembly for cutting onsert segments from the continuous roll (18). Each onsert segment includes a pair of side-by-side preprinted onserts (12). A buckle folder receives each cut onsert segment (22) and folds that segment along at least one transverse fold line. A longitudinal cutter assembly longitudinally cuts each folded onsert segment into two individual onserts.
Abstract:
A bead feeder for serially delivering beads 12 to a downstream location comprises a bead supply wheel 14 which rotates about a vertical axis 20. The bead supply wheel includes a bead supply bowl 22 and a plurality of radially arranged channels 24 below the bowl connected to rotate with the bowl. Discharge openings 26 in the bowl are in alignment with the radially arranged channels to delivery beads to those channels, and a bead receiving pocket 28 is positioned at the outer end of each channel. A transfer wheel 16 picks up beads from the bead receiving pockets and transfers those beads to a delivery wheel 18 by vacuum transfer and release. The delivery wheel serially delivers the beads to the downstream location.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming two filters in a two-up configuration. The apparatus includes a feed wheel (18), an assembly wheel (20), a take-off wheel (22), and a flipping wheel 24. According to the method of the invention, tubes (10) are loaded from the feed wheel (18) to the assembly wheel (20) where one hollow end of the tubes is filled. The half-filled tubesiO' are then transferred to take-off wheel (22) and then to a flipping wheel (24) where the tubes are flipped. The half-filled and flipped tubes (10") are returned to vacant positions on the feed wheel and transferred back to the assembly wheel so that the remaining hollow ends can be { filled. The filled tube (10' ") is transferred to a take-off wheel (22), where it is then removed from the take off wheel (22) using a stripper and/or additional wheels for further processing.
Abstract:
A filter component cutting system (10) comprises a supply hopper (14) of elongate filter rods (12) and a cutting drum (22) with spaced apart flutes (20) on an exterior surface of the drum for receiving the elongate filler rods. A transfer mechanism (16, 18) receives the elongate filter rods from the supply hopper and delivers the rods to the flutes on the cutting drum. At least one cutter (30) adjacent the cutting drum functions to cut the filter rods in to individual filter components as the cutting drum rotates. A process using the system is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A cigarette filter assembly (10) comprises a hollow paper tube (12) with a spaced apart solid fiber plugs (14, 18, 22) inside the tube together with granular filter material (16, 20) in the spaces between the plugs. Energy activated adhesive is only between the solid filter plugs and interior surface portions of the tube. After the spaced apart solid fiber plugs are within the tube the adhesive is activated to secure the plugs to the tube. The energy activated adhesive is only on selected portions of the hollow tube where the solid fiber plugs are located or alternatively the adhesive is only on the exterior surface portions of the solid fiber plugs.

Abstract:
A removable cigarette (224') is manufactured for use in a smoking system which includes a lighter which has electrical heating means disposed in permanent cavity for delivering a flavored tobacco response to a smoker. To manufacture the cigarette a carrier web (259') is provided which has regions (261) of tobacco flavor material. Adhesive regions (261A) are applied from an adhesive applying station (327) to the surface of the carrier web (259') to form spaced regions of adhesive (261A) in between spaced regions of flavor material (261). A filter station (329) attaches filters (333,335) to the adhesive regions (261A) and a wrapping station (337) wraps the web (259') around the filters (333,335) to form a continuous rod of alternating regions of filter and tobacco flavor material. Finally, individual removable cigarettes (224') are formed by severing the continuous rod at a severing station (339).
Abstract:
The invention relates to a smoking system (21) wherein a removable cigarette (23) containing a tobacco-flavoured material is electrically heated by a set of heating elements mounted within a lighter (25) to emanate tobacco or other components flavour as vapours or aerosol, delivered towards the smoker. The cigarette (23) and the lighter (25) are designed so as to ensure the formation of air flow patterns passing through the smoking system and transversely oriented in relation to the cigarette (23). The circulation of aerosol and flavours delivered to the smoker is improved by said flow patterns and the condensation of residual aerosol and vapours in the heating area of the smoking system is reduced.
