Abstract: Various problems arise in accessing the Internet. For example, Internet files have complex file addresses which are prone to incorrect entry by a user, giving rise to access of unwanted files. In one aspect the invention solves this problem by encoding the file address in a bar code symbol, decoding the bar code symbol and accessing the relevant file automatically.

Abstract: An imaging system comprises a module, focusing lens and an aperture sized to allow a target, such as a bar code, to be imaged without being illuminated by light sources on the module. The system further comprises an array of rows of pixels, the pixels in each row being spaced apart and the pixels in successive rows being offset from one another by one-half of a pixel. The array 510 may also lie in an imaging plane that lies at an angle other than a right angle with respect to an optical axis of the focusing lens. There may also be a dark room 250 in the module for enclosing the image sensor.

A focus analysis software module executable by the contr ol and logic circuitry determines the focus quality of the received pixel signals. A selector control software module executable by the control and logic circuitry generates a selection control signal in accordance with the determined focus quality of the received pixel signals. Selector circuitry selectively enables the imaging circuitry to output selected pixel signals o f the plurality of pixel signals in accordance with the selection control sign al.
