    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound having extremely reduced content of hydrolyzable bromine in brominating bisphenol with bromine in a methanol-based solvent, by carrying out bromination in an inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:In brominating bisphenol with bromine in a methanol-based solvent, bromination reaction is carried out in an inert gas atmosphere to give high-quality tetrabromibisphenol A having extremely reduced content of hydrolyzable bromine. Tetrabromobisphenol A obtained by this method does not require a specific purifying process and can be used directly as a flame-retardant for resin suitable for electric and electronic material such as laminate or sealing agent. This production method is a simplified process and industrially advantageous.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain tetrabromobisphenol A reduce in the contents of hydrolyzable bromo groups and inorganic bromide ions by employing methanol containing a specific amount of water as the reaction solvent when bisphenol A is brominated with bromine. CONSTITUTION:When bisphenol A is brominated with bromine, methanol containing 5-15wt.% of water is employed as the reaction solvent, thereby permitting to obtain high quality tetrabromobisphenol A remarkably reduced in the contents of hydrolyzable bromo groups and inorganic bromide ions. The method allows to employ the prepared tetrabromobisphenol A as a flame retardant as such for the resins used for electronic material applications such as laminates and sealants without applying any purification process. The recovery rates of the methanol and hydrogen bromide after the reaction are highly improved because the generation of methyl bromide is remarkably reduced, and the safety of the reaction is further highly improved because the opportunities exposed to methyl bromide on the working environment is reduced.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a flame-retarding polymer composition free of evaporation loss of flame retardant during processing and excellent in light and heat resistance by mixing a polymer with a specified halogen compound. CONSTITUTION:A flame-retarding polymer composition is produced by mixing a polymer with a 4,4'-bis(phthalimido)diphenyl sulfone derivative of the formula (wherein X is Br or Cl; k, l, m and n are each 0-4, and k+l+m+n>1) [e.g., 4,4'-bis(dibromophthalimido)diphenyl sulfone] as a flame retardant. The above polymer composition is freed of evaporation loss of flame retardant during processing and excels in light and heat resistance and also in whiteness as compared with the conventional imide compound. The above flame retardant can be obtained by reacting a halogenated phthalic anhydride with a halogenated 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a crosslinked composition excellent in radiation resistance, by blending an ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer having an extremely low density with a halogenated acenaphthylene (condensate), basic lead compound and (meth) acrylate derivative. CONSTITUTION:A composition obtained by blending (A) 100 pts.wt. resin consisting essentially of a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin expressed by formula I (R is 1-10C straight or branched chain substituted or unsubstituted alkyl) having 0.88-0.915 density with (B) 5-60 pts.wt. halogenated acenaphthylene expressed by formula II (X is Cl or Br; a is 0-2; b is 1-6; n is >=1) and/or a condensate thereof, (C) 0.5-60 pts.wt. basic lead compound, e.g., compounds of lead oxide, lead hydroxide or lead phosphate, or complex salt containing the above-mentioned compounds and (D) 0.5-10 pts.wt. (meth) acrylate derivative. The afore-mentioned composition is molded, then subjected to crosslinking with chemicals or electron radiation to produce a molded body.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To contrive improvement in reaction rate, by the coexistence of a specific compound, such as beta-diketone, in a reaction system in producing the title compound from 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl and a metal alkoxide using a specific mixed solvent and copper based catalyst. CONSTITUTION:4,4'-Dhibromobiphenyl is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula MOR (M is alkali metal; R is 1-15C alkyl, aralkyl or aromatic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent group) in a mixed solvent of N,N-dimethylformamide and a compound expressed by the formula R'OH (R' has the same meaning as that of R) in the presence of a copper compound to produce the title compound useful as a raw material for biphenyl-4,4'-diol. In the process, a beta-diketone compound, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic aromatic compound and/or aliphatic amine compound are present in the above-mentioned reaction system to improve reaction rate while maintaining high selectivity. Thereby the aimed compound is obtained from the afore-mentioned raw material readily producible from biphenyl in high yield for a short time.

CONSTITUTION:Biphenyl is reacted with 2-3mol based on 1mol biphenyl of bromine in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst of an element simple substance of antimony, titanium, tin or zinc or a compound thereof such as a halide, oxide, hydroxide, inorganic salt and/or organic salt, preferably halide to give 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl useful as a raw material for biphenyl-4,4'-diol (monomer for engineering plastics, antioxidant and intermediate for dye) in high selectivity, high yield and in easy reaction control.
