Abstract: The invention is concerned with a process for producing condensed bromoacenaphthylene. The process of the invention comprises the steps of brominating and condensating acenaphthene with bromine in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst; removing the Lewis acid catalyst and then continuing the bromination with bromine with an added radical initiator; and carrying out dehydrobromination reaction. The condensed bromoacenaphthylene can be purified by bringing it into contact with an adsorbent in an organic solvent. The process according to the invention is simple and impurities can be removed selectively and easily. The condensed bromoacenaphthylene thus purified does not adhere onto a roller when kneaded with a resin on rollers, supresses breeding from a shaped composition, and shaped compositions produced from the condensate have improved mechanical properties.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain efficiently and inexpensively pyrogallol, which is useful as an intermediate material for production of photograph developing agents, analytical reagents, medicines and agrochemicals through particular three processes. SOLUTION: This production of pyrogallol comprises making phenol react with a brominating agent having at least one N-Br bond to obtain 2,6- dibromophenol (a bromination process), then 2,6-dibromophenol react with a metal alkoxide of the formula ROM (R is a lower alkyl; M is an alkali metal atom) to obtain 2,6-dibromophenol (an alkoxylation process), and lastly 2,6- dibromophenol react with hydrochloric acid and/or hydrobromic acid (a dealkylation process). Preferable brominating agents are amine derivatives of formula I (R is an alkyl; R is H or an alkyl) or formula II (R is an alkyl). A preferable reaction solvent is chlorobenzene.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce 3-bromocatechol useful as a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals, etc., by reacting an alkoxyphenol with a specific brominating agent and then converting the alkoxy group into OH group with a protonic acid or a Lewis acid. SOLUTION: (A) A 2-alkoxyphenol (preferably 2-methoxyphenol or 2- ethoxyphenol) is reacted with (B) a brominating agent having at least one set of N-Br bond, preferably an amine derivative of formula I (R is an alkyl; R is H or an alkyl) or formula II (R is an alkyl) to provide a 2-alkoxy-6- bromophenol. The alkoxy group thereof is subsequently converted into OH group with a protonic acid or a Lewis acid to afford 3-bromocatechol. For example, 2-methoxyphenol is reacted with N-bromo-t-butylamine to provide 2-bromo-6-methoxyphenol. Anhydrous aluminum chloride is then added to the resultant 2-bromo-6-methoxyphenol to afford 3-bromocatechol.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound at a low temperature for a short time and in a high selectivity by hydrolyzing a 4,4'-dihalogenobiphenyl in an aqueous solution containing an alcohol and a phase transfer catalyst such as a large cyclic polyether. CONSTITUTION:When a 4,4'-dihalogenobiphenyl (the halogen is chlorine or fluorine) is hydrolyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a monovalent and/or divalent copper compound in an aqueous solution containing a 1-3C monovalent alcohol, the hydrolysis reaction is performed in the presence of a compound selected from large cyclic polyethers, quaternary ammonium salt compounds and phosphonium salt compounds (namely a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. 18-crown-6, triethylammonium bromide) to provide biphenyl-4,4'-diol. The method permits to perform the hydrolysis reaction under a mild condition in a state of the reduced load of a purification process without corroding equipments, thereby being profitable.
