Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding door closer which changes the closing velocity of a door according to a position of the door and closes the door safely as well as promptly.
SOLUTION: The sliding door closer 10 for closing a door 2 of sliding type automatically is provided with a driving gear 3 which meshes with a rack 11 mounted on a door frame and rotates itself. The driving gear 3 has an urging means 4 to generate a rotation force. It also includes a damping means 6 to put brake on the driving gear 3 when the driving gear 3 in relation to the rack 11 is within a predetermined position area and also a transmitting means 5 to interlock the driving means 3 with the damping means 6. Accordingly, by actuating the damping means 6 immediately after the door 2 is opened, a person in a wheel chair, the old and the like who need time to go through the space made by the opened door 2 can pass through without banging themselves against the door 2, which can contribute to barrier-free residence and facilities.

SOLUTION: A hollow shaft 14 is rotatably inserted through a body 7 storing a brake fluid. A spiral rod 8 is inserted in the hollow shaft 14, and the hollow shaft and the spiral rod are screw-engaged. An outer surface of the hollow shaft 14 is provided with a resistor 20 located in the brake fluid. The body 7 is fixed to an opening frame, and the spiral rod 8 is fixed to the door. When the door is opened/closed, the spiral rod 8 is linearly reciprocated in an axial direction. This motion is converted into rotary motion of the hollow shaft 14, and the hollow shaft rotates in a speed reduced state to apply the brake to the movement of the door.
