Abstract: Disclosed is an aqueous cyanide-containing composition comprising at least one non-ionic surfactant, wherein the nonionic surfactant, in a concentration of from 0.01 to 0.2% by weight in an aqueous solution adjusted to a pH of from 9.8 to 10.2 with NaOH, at 23°C, leads to a reduction in the contact angle on glass after 1 second by at least 10°. Also disclosed is a process for extracting metals from materials comprising these metals, comprising: (a) provision of an optionally milled metal-containing material; (b) provision of a composition as described above; (c) bringing of the metal-containing material into contact with the composition in the presence of an oxidizing agent, and obtaining a mother liquor enriched with metal cyanide complexes.
