Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols by conventional polycondensation in which the polymers obtained are reacted with ss-lactones of the formula (I) in which R , R , R and R may be identical or different and are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl, nitrile or substituted alkyl groups, and/or are reacted with polymeric propiolactones. Particularly suitable lactones are propiolactone, ss,ss-dimethylpropiolactone, alpha , alpha -diphenylpropiolactone or polymeric propiolactone.

Abstract: Thermoplastic molding materials contain a copolymer A and a graft copolymer B. The copolymer A is a hard component comprising one or more copolymers of styrene and/or alpha -methylstyrene with from 20 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile. The graft copolymer B comprises one or more crosslinked acrylate polymer with a mean particle size of 0.5-0.8 mu m (d50 value of the cumulative mass distribution), a particle distribution, expressed by the ratio in the range Q>/=0.6, and a glass transition temperature Tg below 0 DEG C. A mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in a weight ratio from 88:12 to 65:35 is grafted onto this rubber.

X is phenylene, naphthylene, 3,4-dibromo-cyclohexylene, ethylene, propylene, or butylene residue; Y is ethylene, propylene or butylene or Z is S, O, -NH- or CMe2-; X or Y may carry up to 4 Br-residues. Shrink characteristics, thermal stability, breaking strength and colour (whiteness) of the fibres are not affected by the polyesters.
