Date Aug. 8, 1991.Geminal dimethylalkyl compounds, process for their preparation and their use in liquid-crystalline mixtures Geminal dimethylalkyl compounds of the formula (I) (I) in which: R1 is, for example, straight-chain or branched (with or without an asymmetric carbon atom) alkyl or alkenyl having 2 to 16 carbon atoms, A1, A2 and A3 are, for example, identical or different 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, M1 and M2 are, for example, identical or different CO-O or O-CO, G is for example, identical or different straight-chain or branched alkylene having 1 to 16 carbon atoms, k, l, m and n are zero or 1, and R6 is straight-cain alkyl having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, can advantageously be employed in liquid-crystalline mixtures. In liquid-crystalline mixtures, said compounds result in a melting point depression, in a shift in the temperature limit of the Sc phase in ferroelectric mixtures and in other improvements of important electrooptical characteristic values.

Abstract: Chiral aryl-2,3-epoxyalkyl ethers or the corresponding thio compounds, and the use thereof as dopes in liquidcrystal phases The novel compounds are aryl-2,3-epoxyalkyl ethers or thioethers or the corresponding thiirane compounds having a mesogenic aromatic component and a chiral component having a three-membered heterocyclic ring, wherein, in the general formula (I), (I) the symbols have the following meaning: R1 = straight-chain or branched (C1-C12) alkyl, where one or two non-neighbouring CH2 groups may be replaced by O or S atoms, A = diazine-2,5-diyl or diazine-3,6-diyl, X and Y = O and/or S, and R2, R3 and R4, independently of one another = H, straightchain (C1-C10)alkyl or branched (C3-C10)alkyl, where R2, R3 and R4 are not simultaneously H. The compounds are preferably employed in tilted smectic liquid-crystal phases which they convert into ferroelectric liquid-crystal phases; they have high values for spontaneous polarization or they induce high values for spontaneous polarization.

Abstract: The invention concerns the preparation of explosion-proof trimethine salts which are only slightly soluble in water and have the formula (I), in which: R is an aryl or a heteroaryl group, which may contain one or more substituents, and X is an anion-equivalent of a non-oxidizing acid group which is inert with respect to trimethine cation and forms trimethine salts which are only slightly soluble in water, by formylation of compounds of the formula (II): R-CH2?-COOH, in which: R has the same meaning as in formula (I), under the conditions of the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction, followed by aqueous hydrolysis of the formylation products to form water-soluble primary trimethine salts, and reaction of the water-soluble primary trimethine salts in the aqueous reaction mixture with acids of the formula (III): (H)n?X, in which: X has the same meaning as in formula (I) and n is a number from 1 to 3, or with water-soluble salts of such acids, in at least stoichometric proportions, and separation of the resulting trimethine salts of formula (I) which are only slightly soluble in water. Trimethine salts of formula (I) can be used as intermediates in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, particularly pyrimidines and pyridines.
