Abstract:
A method and apparatus for delivering media to a group of target communication devices provides for multicasting media to the group of target communication devices to save network resources. The disclosed embodiments provide for a significant reduction in network traffic and media processing time by transmitting media in multicast transport mode, where a single copy of the media destined for a group of target recipients is transmitted to a wireless infrastructure over the multicast path. The wireless infrastructure replicates and transmits one copy of the media to each of the target recipients that are assigned to dedicated channels, but multicasts one copy of the media to the target recipients that are assigned to a shared channel.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for initiating a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving a request for initiating a group call based o n a member and initiating the group call based on the received member list. Th e method and apparatus also provides for announcing the group call to each member in the member list, receiving acknowledgement from a member who wishe s to participate in the group call, and forwarding media to the member after i ts traffic channel is re-established. The method and apparatus also provides fo r a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for terminating a member from a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving an indication from a user who wishes to terminate participation in a group call and sending a request to a server to terminate the user from the group call. The method and apparatus further provides for the server to receive the request for terminating a user from a group call, terminate the user from the group call, and send a response indicating that the user is terminated from the group call.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for efficient data distribution to a group of users. In an aspect, a method is provided for distributing information. The method includes detecting one or more requests for the information, determining whether the information is to be broadcast, and transmitting the information in a broadcast transmission based on the determination. In another aspect, an apparatus is provided for distributing information. The apparatus includes a detector configured to detect one or more requests for the information, a determination module configured to determine whether the information is to be broadcast, and a transmitter configured to transmit the information in a broadcast transmission based on the determination.
Abstract:
A system, method, and computer program for providing a greater reliability for a direct-communication, such as push-to-talk communication, being bridged between members of a communicating group of wireless telecommunication devices. Each wireless telecommunication device, such as a cellular telephone or PDA (14, 16, 18), of a plurality periodically informs (124) a group communication server of the presence of that wireless telecommunication device on the wireless telecommunication network such that upon receipt (100) of a request from a wireless telecommunication device to bridge a direct communication, the group communication server will attempt to bridge (114) the requested direct communication with the target set of wireless telecommunication devices only if at least one of the wireless telecommunication devices of the target set has indicated its presence on the wireless telecommunication network.
Abstract:
In group wireless telecommunication, such as push-to-talk (PTT) calls, a voice communication is broadcast through Internet protoc data packets to other member devices of the PTT group. At least one communication server (106) receives a single communication stream from a communicating wireless device, such as a PTT call, and creates a group communication to all wireless telecommunication devices of the designated group with the broadcast of Internet protocol data packets containing the voice data of the communication stream to one or more wireless telecommunication devices of the receiving group that can receive and handle t packets. Other wireless network infrastructure can be used to assist the communication server in generation and broadcast of the Internet protocol data packets to the receiving wireless telecommunication devices.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for sending information to a target mobile station include compressing the header portion of short data burst messages before being sent to the target mobile stations, and decompressing the header portion of the received short data burst messages at the mobile stations.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for enabling fast set up for push-to-talk (PT) communications in a wireless communication network. PTT set up related messages are identified through a specially designated header and the messages with the special designated header are transmitted through signaling channels from a radio transmission unit to a mobile device.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adding a member to an active call in a group communication network provides for receiving a member list from a user and sending a request to a server to add the member list to the active group call. The method and apparatus further provides for announcing each member in the member list that they are being added to the group call, receiving acknowledgement from a member who wishes to participate in the group call, and forwarding media to the member. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
A system and method for signaling and delivering group communication data, such as push-to-talk (PTT) setup data, to a dormant wireless telecommunication device across a control channel on a wireless communication network. Each wireless telecommunication device is able to direct a single group communication stream to a designated target group of other wireless telecommunication devices, and the wireless telecommunication device has a dormant state in which the wireless telecommunication devices bridges a control channel with a communication server and an active state in which the wireless telecommunication device bridges a dedicated communication channel with the communication server. The wireless telecommunication device receives group communication setup data though a control channel for incoming group communications, and such delivery occurring without fully bridging a dedicated communication channel to that wireless telecommunication device.
