    Abstract: An application's access to storage (Fig. 1) is limited on a per application basis. The application is granted access to a portion of the storage (135). The application may manipulate that portion (135) of the storage (119) by creating distinct file structures within that portion (135), modifying, reading and writing files contained therein. The application is denied acces s to the storage area outside the granted portion (135). Similarly, other applications stored in the storage area (119) follow a similar paradigm. In one embodiment, the storage area is a hierarchical file structure and applications are stored as children in the file structure. The applications, however, are mapped to indicate each are stored at the file structure to prevent access to other areas of the file structure. In another embodiment, the file structure supports a shared directory that multiple applications ar e mapped to, also as a root directory but to another drive.

    Abstract: An extensible event notification system detects certain events (106), and notifies requestor programs (108a-c) that have registered to receive such notification. The system includes a notification manager (102), multiple eve nt notifier programs (104a-c), multiple requestor programs (108a-c), a map (110 ), and a notification dictionary (112). When loaded by the notification manager (102), each event notifier program (104a-c) detecs certain prescribed events (106). When advised by notifier programs(104a-c)of events(106), the notification manager(102)consults the map (110)to identify the requester programs (108a-c)registered for those events (106) and any applicable notification parameters. Then the notification manager(102) loads the requestor programs (108a-c) registered for those events (106), and notifies them of the occurrence of the events (106) according to the applicable notification parameters (112).

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracking a position of a mobile radio unit within a communication system. The mobile unit uses information from earth orbiting satellites and/or information received from infrastructure of the system to dynamically select alternative operating parameters. The method includes providing a controller and storing a look-up table in memory coupled to the controller. The method further includes a calculating a position of the mobile unit using measurements from the earth orbiting satellite system and/or the system infrastructure. Position values from the look-up table are compared with that of the position of the mobile radio unit in order to determine the geographical location of the mobile unit from the look-up table. At least one operating parameter is then dynamically selected based upon the determined geographical loacation. In preferred embodiments, the mobile radio unit dynamically selects either a specific language in which to display menu options or an encryption scheme based on the determined geographical location.

    Abstract: A telephone has several lists of phone numbers. Each phone number within a list has a number of digits which is not less than a predetermined minimum number, and not more than a predetermined maximum number. The maximum number is the "size" of the list. When a digit is entered, the phone compares (1B) the number of digits entered to the lists, and selects (1C) the list of the smallest size which is greater than or equal to the number of digits entered. That list is searched (1D) and the results displayed (1E) when the search is complete. If another digit is entered during the search (1F), the comparing (1B) and list selecting (1C) steps are repeated.
