Abstract: 1416752 Colour television tubes RCA. CORPORATION 15 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1936/73 Heading H1D In a photographic method of fabricating the phosphor pattern of the screen of a shadow mask colour tube, in which a photosensitive coating is exposed to a small area light source through the shadow mask, misregister is reduced by first exposing every point of a first zone of the coating predominantly but not wholly to a light source positioned at one location; and then exposing a second zone of the coating predominantly but not wholly to a light source positioned at a different location. The two light source positions may be displaced with respect to one another either parallel or perpendicular to the screen axis, or in both directions. An exemplary calculation of the change of light source position required to eliminate degrouping errors at the corners of the screen is provided. Different lighthouses, or a single adjustable lighthouse, may be employed for the different exposures, the use of different optical intensity filters ensuring maximum intensity over the respective zones. As described, the two zones are defined by a circular boundary symmetrically disposed with respect to the screen (Fig. 3, not shown), but more than two zones and associated exposures may be employed. Reference is also made to the use of adjustable irises or shutters for the continuous sweeping out of an annular zone with simultaneous movement of the light source. Preferably, the exposures are performed using a correction lens. The method may be employed for a phosphor dot or line screen, and for black-matrix or non-matrix screens.

Abstract: 1358811 Colour television tubes RCA CORPORATION 21 July 1972 [22 July 1971] 34252/72 Heading H1D In a cathode ray tube having a display comprising a mosaic of discrete excited areas, the sizes of the areas are graded in a non-circular manner; this improves screen brightness and/or misregister tolerance compared with circular grading. In a shadow-mask tube with positive tolerance wherein the mask defines the areas of the luminous spots, the sizes of the apertures in the mask are graded non-circularly. In one example the contours of equal sized apertures are rectangular and run parallel to the edges of a rectangular display area; the sizes vary from 7.5 mils at the edges to 9 mils at the centre. In another example the contours are elliptical, and in a further example the contours are oval, being intermediate between ellipitcal and rectangular. In a black matrix tube with negative tolerance wherein the sizes of the luminous areas are determined by the sizes of the apertures in the matrix, the apertures may be graded in rectangular, elliptical or oval contours; in this case the shadow mask apertures may also be graded to balance the clipping and leaving tolerances and would not necessarily match the grading in the matrix.

Abstract: Improvement is provided in the appearance of a color picture type cathode-ray tube including rectangular faceplate with an exterior surface having curvature along both the minor (Y-Y) and major (X-X) axes. At least in the center portion of the faceplate, the curvature along the minor axis is at least 10 percent greater than the curvature along the major axis. Points on the exterior surface near the ends of the major axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a first plane (P1) perpendicular to the central axis (Z-Z) of the tube; points on the exterior surface near the ends of the minor axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a second plane (P2) which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane; and points on the exterior surface near the ends of the diagonals of the rectangular faceplate, at the edges of the screen, lie in a third plane (P3) which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane. The three planes are spaced from the center portion of the faceplate in the order of second plane, first plane and third plane. Further relative dimensions are detailed.

Abstract: The present invention is an improvement in a method of screening a line screen slit mask color picture tube. Such method includes coating a faceplate panel of the tube with a photosensitive material, inserting a slit shadow mask into the panel and exposing the photosensitive material by passing light from a line light source through the slits of the mask. Such method further comprises positioning a generally cylindrical shaped lens between the line light source and the faceplate panel during exposure of the photosensitive material. The longitudinal axis of the lens is oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the line light source. The improvement comprises moving both the faceplate panel and the cylindrical shaped lens in synchronization in a direction parallel to the line light source during the exposing step.

Abstract: The assembly (Fig. 3) has a trio of inline cathodes (21), a first grid (G1, 23) positioned adjacent the cathodes and a second grid (G2, 25) positioned between the first grid and a first focussing electrode (G3, 27). Each grid and electrode has a trio of inline apertures aligned with the cathodes. A common, assymmetric focussing lens is, in use, established between the first focussing electrode (G3) and a second focussing electrode (G4, 29). The lens has a maximum transverse dimension in a first direction parallel to the plane of the inline apertures greater than its maximum transverse dimension in a second orthogonal direction. In order that the cross-section of each electron beam has a greater dimension in the first direction than in the second direction at the beam- entrance of the lens, there is a slotted structure (Fig. 7, 68) associated with said first (23) grid interposing a rectangular slot (68) between each aperture (64) of the first grid and the aligned aperture of the second grid. The long dimension of the rectangle is in the second direction in the first grid (23).
