Abstract: A method of producing, on a physical medium, a gradient tonal representation of an image and a printhead for producing the same. An input image is divided into first and second regions. First, continuously variable intensity level, continuous tone and second, discretely variable intensity level, half-tone portions of the representation which respectively correspond to the first and second regions of the image are then printed by depositing selected quantities of ink on the first and second portions of the physical medium such that each pixel thereof has an ink intensity level corresponding to the image intensity level for the corresponding one of the pixels of the first region of the image. The ink is deposited on the second portion of the physical medium by depositing a spot of ink having a first diameter on selected ones of the pixels of the second portion, depositing a spot of ink having a second diameter on others of the pixels of the second portion and depositing no ink on still others of the pixels of the second portion such that the second portion of the representation has the desired ink intensity level. The color of the ink ejected may be black, in which case, the gradient tonal representation produced thereby shall be a gray scale representation, or other color such as yellow, cyan or magenta.

Abstract: An ink jet printhead body has an ink filter structure integrally incorporated therein and operative to filter ink flowing into its internal ink receiving channels disposed between piezoelectrically deflectable interior wall portions of the body. In various illustrated embodiments of the printhead, the filter structure is defined by a series of photoetched micro filter passageways formed integrally in an outer side portion of the printhead body, a filter cavity formed in the outer side portion and receiving a separate photoetchable filter member in which photoetched micro filter passageways are formed, and a filter cavity formed in the outer side portion and receiving a separate mesh-type micro filter member. In an embodiment of the printhead adapted for use with phase change type ink, a heating channel is interiorly disposed within the outer body side portion and operatively receives an electrical resistance heating wire used to heat phase change type ink disposed within the ink receiving channels in the printhead body.

Abstract: Double buffering operations to reduce host bus hold times when an expansion bus master is accessing the main memory on a host bus of a computer system. A system data buffer coupled between the main memory and the expansion bus includes 256-bit double read and write buffers. A memory controller coupled to the double read and write buffers and to the expansion bus includes primary and secondary address latches corresponding to the double buffers. The memory controller detects access to the main memory, compares the expansion bus address with the primary and secondary addresses and controls the double read and write buffers and the primary and secondary address latches accordingly. During write operations, data to be written to the same line of memory is written to a first of the double write buffers until a write occurs to an address to a different line before data is transferred to main memory. During read operations, a full line is loaded into a first of the double read buffers, and the next full line is retrieved into a second read buffer from main memory if a subsequent read hit occurs in the first read buffer.

Abstract: Three prioritization schemes for determining which of several CPUs receives priority to become bus master of a host bus in a multiprocessor system, and an arbitration scheme for transferring control from one bus master to another. Each prioritization scheme prioritizes n elements, where a total of (n/2)x(n-1) priority bits monitors the relative priority between each pair of elements. An element receives the highest priority when each of the n-1 priority bits associated with that element points to it. In the arbitration scheme, the current bus master of the host bus determines when transfer of control of the host bus occurs as governed by one of the prioritization schemes. The arbitration scheme gives EISA bus masters, RAM refresh and DMA greater priority than CPUs acting as bus masters, and allows a temporary bus master to interrupt the current bus master to perform a write-back cache intervention cycle. The arbitration scheme also supports address pipelining, bursting, split transactions and reservations of CPUs aborted when attempting a locked cycle. Address pipelining allows the next bus master to assert its address and status signals before the beginning of the data transfer phase of the next bus master. Split transactions allows a CPU posting a read to the EISA bus to arbitrate the host bus to another device without re-arbitrating for the host bus to retrieve the data. The data is asserted on the host bus when it is idle even if the host bus is being controlled by another device.

Abstract: A modem which includes connections for both land lines and a cellular phone. The modem contains high and low level routines that allow it to perform standard AT commands rationally when connected to a cellular phone, and further perform additional AT commands that access cellular specific features. An applications software program in a computer connected to the modem can provide a number of options for determining whether to use the land line or the cellular phone when both are connected. First, it can default to the land line and only use the cellular phone if the land line is not available. Alternatively, it can first use the cellular phone and only use the land line if the cellular phone signal strength is not sufficient. Further, cellular file transfer operations can be aborted if the remaining battery life in the cellular phone is insufficient to reliably complete the transfer.

Abstract: A video driver in a computer system is used to map a large video frame buffer into the logical address space above physical memory while the computer system is operating in WINDOWS STANDARD mode. The requirements of the necessary address space for the frame buffer (i.e., the size of the frame buffer), and the size of physical memory are determined. If there is sufficient address space above physical memory in which to map the frame buffer, the video driver attempts to map the frame buffer there in that address space. The desired physical and linear addresses for the frame buffer are determined. If the video driver detects that MICROSOFT WINDOWS is operating in standard mode, it searches memory to find the page directory that MICROSOFT WINDOWS created. Once the page directory is found, the driver creates a new page table to map the frame buffer into the desired linear address range and adds a new entry to the existing page directory to point to the new page table.

Abstract: The present invention includes two variations of an apparatus which generate a version of the IORC* bus signal that is supplied to the read strobe input of a floppy disk controller that is asserted at the appropriate time during verify cycles between the floppy disk controller and a DMA controller. These designs allow an 82077 floppy disk controller to operate properly in FIFO mode when it is being used with software that does not require generation of this signal. The designs include use of a PAL and certain bus signal inputs to generate a signal which is asserted at the appropriate times during verify transfers. This signal is combined with the regular IORC* bus signal to produce the signal that is provided to the read strobe input of the floppy disk controller.

Abstract: A method for use in upgrading a resource of a computer from an existing version of the resource to a later version of the resource. The method includes the steps of (a) digitally storing upgrade information which identifies the later version and describes features of the later version relative to one or more earlier versions of the resource, (b) digitally storing in the computer information identifying the existing version, by computer, automatically determining which of the earlier versions is the existing version, and (c) based on the results of the comparing step, automatically determining, or displaying to a user at least some of the upgrade information to aid the user in determining, whether to perform an upgrade. The upgrade information may be stored on a portable medium along with copies of the resources and the upgrade information may include instructions, in accordance with a predefined common syntax, for installing each of the resources.

Abstract: A speaker system for use in a thin film video monitor apparatus is disclosed. The video monitor apparatus includes a thin film video display panel as well as a stiffening panel adjacent to the thin film video display panel. Next, a plurality of piezo speaker transducers are attached to one of the sides of the stiffening panel. The stiffening panel typically is composed of a material such as aluminum honeycomb sheets or a polycarbonate sheet. Other materials for use as the stiffener may include magnesium shells or ABS plastic. The speakers are defined so that a first sound channel and a second sound channel are provided, and these sound channels can define a left and right channel for proper stereo imaging. Between the video monitor and the stiffening panel is located an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield. Further, a transmission line is provided to connect a first piezo transducer to a second piezo transducer in such a way so that frequency overlap can occur between the two transducers based upon the transmission line distance defined for the first piezo transducer and for the second piezo transducer. Further, the transmission line may have the same distance between both speakers where frequency overlap is not a concern. The stiffening panel is provided to increase the mobile energy in the lower frequencies during operation.
