    Abstract: Imidazolylmethylene gp.-contg. dyes of formula (I) are new. In the formula, R1 is H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl; each R2 and R3 independently is H, 1-5C alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl; R4 is 1-12C alkyl and X(-) is an anion. F is a (m+n)-valent residue of a phthalocyanine, indigo or an anthraquinone dye contg. at least 1 Ph gp., a higher annellated carbonyl dye, equinacridone, perylen-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide, anthrapyrimidine, pyrazolanthrone, diaminonaphthoquinone, naphthazerine or a naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid diimide; where m is 0-5 and n is 0-5, providing that m+n is greater or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 5. Specifically claimed are cpds. where F is a (m+n)-valent residue of a copper phthalocyanine, (iso)violanthrone, naphthoylen- benzimidazole or an anthraquinone bis-acridone, and (i) each R1 and R2 independently is H, 1-4C alkyl (pref. H or (m)ethyl), R3 is H, R4 is 1-4C alkyl and (n+m) is 1-4; and (ii) each R1 and R2 independently is H, 1-4C alkyl, R3 is H, n is 1-4 and m is O. (I) are esp. useful for dyeing cellulose fibres, e.g. as paper, in fast shades. The dyes are prepd. from readily available, non-toxic starting materials without formation of undesired by-prods. (as in some prior art procedures employing chloromethyl cpds.). Dyeings produced by the claimed dyes contg. a phthalocyanine residue can be decolourised with sodium hypochlorite, which is advantageous in reprocessing waste paper.
