    Abstract: The assembly (Fig. 3) has a trio of inline cathodes (21), a first grid (G1, 23) positioned adjacent the cathodes and a second grid (G2, 25) positioned between the first grid and a first focussing electrode (G3, 27). Each grid and electrode has a trio of inline apertures aligned with the cathodes. A common, assymmetric focussing lens is, in use, established between the first focussing electrode (G3) and a second focussing electrode (G4, 29). The lens has a maximum transverse dimension in a first direction parallel to the plane of the inline apertures greater than its maximum transverse dimension in a second orthogonal direction. In order that the cross-section of each electron beam has a greater dimension in the first direction than in the second direction at the beam- entrance of the lens, there is a slotted structure (Fig. 7, 68) associated with said first (23) grid interposing a rectangular slot (68) between each aperture (64) of the first grid and the aligned aperture of the second grid. The long dimension of the rectangle is in the second direction in the first grid (23).

In the specific improvement, the cathodoluminescent lines of said screen, in front plan view, first increase in curvature with an increase in distance from the minor axis of the screen and then decrease in curvature with further increase in distance from the minor axis, to become substantially straight at the short sides of the screen.

    Abstract: Improvement is provided in the appearance of a color picture type cathode-ray tube including rectangular faceplate with an exterior surface having curvature along both the minor (Y-Y) and major (X-X) axes. At least in the center portion of the faceplate, the curvature along the minor axis is at least 10 percent greater than the curvature along the major axis. Points on the exterior surface near the ends of the major axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a first plane (P1) perpendicular to the central axis (Z-Z) of the tube; points on the exterior surface near the ends of the minor axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a second plane (P2) which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane; and points on the exterior surface near the ends of the diagonals of the rectangular faceplate, at the edges of the screen, lie in a third plane (P3) which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane. The three planes are spaced from the center portion of the faceplate in the order of second plane, first plane and third plane. Further relative dimensions are detailed.

The arrangement provides a substantially rectangular contour near the periphery of the faceplate lying in a plane P thus creating an illusion that a picture produced on the faceplate is flat. The faceplate may be associated with a shadow mask which similarly has greater curvature along its minor axis than along its major axis. Variations in the thickness of the faceplate are also discussed.

    Abstract: 1385745 Colour television tubes RCA CORPORATION 1 May 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 20047/72 Heading H1D A colour television tube of the shadow mask type using three co-planar beams, is provided with a deflection yoke adapted to produce a pin cushion shaped horizontal deflecting field which causes under convergence at extreme horizontal deflection, and a barrel-shaped vertical deflecting field which causes over-convergence at extreme vertical deflection; and the electron gun is adapted to produce a spacing between the beams at the centre of the deflection yoke not greater than 0À2 inch. Dynamic convergence arrangements are then unnecessary but may be provided for larger tubes. The electron gun may comprise three individual cathodes and common G1 to G4 electrodes provided with apertures for the beams; the outer apertures of the final electrode may be surrounded by magnetically permeable material such as nickel iron to partly screen the outer beams from the deflection fields and thereby equalize the raster sizes for the three colours. The deflection yoke is as described in Specification 1385747 and is preferaby toroidal but saddle coils may be used. The shadow mask may be provided with elongate apertures, and the fluorescent screen may comprise stripes of different colours.
